Special Counsel Is Instructed to
Ascertain State’s Holdings
at St. Mary's,
The Western and Atlantic Lease
Commission, in executive session,
Thursday , directed W. A. Wimbigh,
special counsel, to investigate the
records of the State to ascertain the
extent of the property owned at St.
Marys, proposed by J. A. J. Hender
son, president of the Ocilla Southern,
for terminals of the proposed ex
tension of the State road from Atlan
ta to the sea.
This will be done in connection
with the proposition submitted by
Guyt McLendon, representing Mr.
Henderson, to extend the road and
accept in payment $10,000,000 of 4 1-2
per cent State bonds. It was repre
sented the State owns between 2,500
and 3,000 acres at St. Marys. The
Commission will ask Mr. Henderson
for further details as to route, sur
veys, and the use of the Ocilla South
ern in connection with the proposi
tion before passing on it.
John 8. Fletcrer, of Chattanooga,
chairman of the Broad street com
mittee of the Chamber of Commerce
of that city, in a letter to C. Mur
phey Candler, president of the Com-‘
missien, says Chattanooga will leave
the disposition of the property there
with the Commission without further
representations before the body, con
fident it will be handled for the best
interests of the city. It was pointed
out the property has a greater value
for commercial purposes than for
railroad, and the Commission was
requested to consider this in connec
tion with its disposition of it.
Sixty days’ grace in-which to pre
pare the plaza plans was granted the
Chamber of Commerce committee. No
action was taken on the proposition
of H. H. Dean, of Gainesville, to lease
the overhead rights in Atlanta and
the terminal property in Chatta
nooga for commercial purposes.

Silver Trowel To Be
Used at Dedication
Gutzon Borglum, artist-sculptor,
was discussing with Forrest Adair,
master of ceremonies, the last detalls
of the dedication ceremonies of the
Stone Mountain Confederate memo
rial, to be condueted Saturday after
noon.
“How about Grand Master Ballard's
trowel. Has he one?" asked Mr.
Borglum,
“He's a regular Mason. If he hasn't
a regular trowel we'll take his union
card away,” said Mr. Adair.
“That won't do,” sald Mr. Borglum.
“I want it to be a solid sllver trowel,
with an inscription on it, and after
the corner post is lald we'll present it
to Mrs. Helen C, Plane for the D.u:h-l
ters of the Confederacy, to be pre
served with Confederate relics In the
Temple beneath the statue. I'll .
get it"” '
Mr. Borglum hurried over to Jack
Wood, of Silver & Wood, and ordorod'
the trowel rushed. Five minutes later
Mr. Adair arrived at the jeweler's.
“Cut out the handle,” he sald. “I'll
attend to that”
Mr. Adair drove out to the Tech
High School and laid Mr. Borglum's
specifications before Professor Cul
ver.
“I want the Atlantd schools to get
in on this,” he said.
Professor Culver dug into a hiding
place and brought up a bit of fine old
seasoned mahogany. Ten minutes
later the boys of the school were
turning and polishing the handle for
the siiver trowel. It was ready early
on Friday.
