the long trudge to Riggs End, my un
cle's house lin Surrey, had been, as
1 feared, as, knowing him and his
manners and his callous brutality, I
Knew it must be—had been in vain.
“Live or die. Please yourself,” was
his advice, and all the assistance he
proffered.
I tramped on, footsore, hungry, so
utterly weary that at times I think
1 dreamed or became lightheaded as
1 walked. Under the moon the Lon
don road stretched like a ribbon of
white tapo—stralght as a dle, as the
Romans had planned it—to the sum
mit of m‘n Down. It was close on

The lights of London glowed above
Riggs Down, and 1 kept my eyes on
the glare, for the long straight, seem
ingly endless road discouraged me.
I came upon the scene of the acci
dent suddenly, then. I noticpd noth-
Ing till the back wheel of a motor
bicycie protruding from a juniper
bush by the side of the road startled
me.
Its rider lay beyond the bush, face
downward—a young man lay very
still, an arm splayed out on the turf
before him--lay so still that I shiv
ered at first, and hesitated to ape
proach him. Only for a minute,
though, When, gently, | turned him
over | was appailed, A great jugged
flint stucek up crimson where his
forehead had rested. Still he bled,

moonlight, his nose, his ears, his lips
putty-colored and cold to the touch.
In the long ago, before I grew up
and my uncle turned curmudgeon, I
had romped on Riggs Downs till 1
knew every inch of it, I ran to the
dew-pond—it lles west of the road,
surrounded by ferns and stunted
thornbushes. With my cap full of
water 1 returned and rendered rough
and ready first aid. ! washed and
bandaged his handkerchief and mine
and the sleeves of my shirt—discoy
ered a flask of brandy in his pocket,
and forced a drop or so between his
clenched teeth, pillowed his head on
a hummock of soft grass, and then
stood up staring around. To earry
him was Impossible; to carry my own
weary self was as much as 1 could
