Atlanta Faces Building
Era With Opportunities
danba b SRR —
’ By A. TEN EYCK BROWN,
Prominent Atlanta Architect.
Today, Atlanta stands face to face with a vast amount of builds
ing that must be done, and this fact can hardly be rebutted by any«
one who has seen the ghastly looking fire-devastated distriet. A
few are wont to see this work ahead in the light
Koy o | that it presents only a burden that, at the present
i time, is nearly unbearable. Others, who look at
AN it in the truest and wisest light, are wont to ex.
, ; | claim—'‘the burden of rebuilding is as naught
s | compared with the opportunities it presents.”’
— The fire-swept district, however, is but a
§ | small acreage as compared to the suburbs on
F every side of the city that are now beginning to
e | grow. Put the two together and builders of the
et = | city are at once confrented with a mighty task,
m a task that will spell the intrinsic value of the
@ | future Atlanta home.
T & On the other hand, there is the ever-grow
ing business district, But little need be said per
taining to it, as its precedent for THE BEST kind of building has
already been set—and it will be followed, in due time, by all suc
ceeding business houses and office buildings.
It is, then, for those who intend to build, and the builder who
does the work, and the architect who draws the plans, to co-operate
to the highest degree of which modesn efflciency permits, in set
ting a NEW PRECEDENT for home building that will eventually
transform the residential sections of our city till they attain to the
degree of material enhancement in value and beautification as tan
tamount to that attained by our business section since its PRECE
DENT was set by the erection of our first skyscraper.

Great Prosperity
~ CHICAGOG, July 21.—Some La Salls
street men are pointing out that the
end of the war would mean the end of
war measures in Washington. It would
mean the end of the absorption of funds
by Government loans. It would mean
the end of eveess profit taxes, and the
end of price fixing, which stock prices
have alreadv so greatly discounted. Tt
is pointed out orders or books and
known requitements which can not be
deferred will furnish capacity business
for several years,
Prices received are expected to ba
at least larger than those our Govern
ment would now fix. There would be a
realignment of prices of industrial
the end of excess profit taxes, and the
shares of concerns now booked up with
peace work rising.
It would take sn(:xe months before Ku
rope could get it§B men back to their
homes. The problem of putting them
back into industry will be tremendous.
As for protecting our geld reserves from
too sudden a collapse, we have our own
redeemed securities, the loans made to
Europe in the past three years, and
the loans made to our Allieg directly by
the Government.

Crops in Canada
REGINA, SASKATCHEWAN, July
21.—Dry weather, according to cor=
respondents in many parts of Saskatch
ewan in reports to the statistics branch
of the Provineial Department of Agri
culture, is causing heavy cro? damage.
One correspondent states that hun
dreds of acres of erops in the district ha
visited will never be cut. Others report
the grain is burning up for want of suf
ficlent rain, and others again mention
that in some districts the farmers are
discouraged with the condition of grow
ing crops and are plowing them under.
Weeds in some cases are sald to ba
causing no small amount of damage.
Raports from some of the districts
are, however, more encouraging. as rain
has fallen Juring the last few days and
the weather is cooier.
_ The West and Southwest districts
have suffered most from the dry
weather, but in virtnally every part of
the province all erops are from ten to
fourteen days late. The hay orop probe
ably will be well up to the averaee.
