Atlantans Warmly
Praised for Welcome
Given Men at Gordon
The way In which Atlanta has re
ceived and cared for the selectmen of
the national army has elicited the
highest praise from the Outlook in
its issue of November 28, It says:
“When tens of thousands of home
sick boys, torn from their familiar
setting, with eyes eager to serve
their country in spite of heavy
hearts, began to pour into the camp
and overflow into the streets of the
city, every decent American citizen
subordinated personal profit to the
instincts of brotherhood and began to
ask, ‘What can we do for these fel
lows?" Atlanta set itself to answer
that question with a combination of
intelligence and enthusiasm almost
bevona praise. Under the best lead
ership the city could furnish, Atlanta
mobilized and organized its resources
for the benefit of the soldiers.”
Dr. Joseph Odell is the writer, and
his observations are the result of a
personal visit paid the city several
weeks back. At that time he was given
every opportunity for learning just
what work was in progress and what
was contemplated. Whils here he at
tended a meeting of the weekly round
table of the Atlanta Commission on
Training Camp Activities and there
heard the men who are working with
the soldiers at Camp Gordon and the
men and women who are working in
their behalf in the city confer as to
what was being done. Of thiz round
table meeting he writes:
“In many ways it was the most re
markable meeting I ever attended,
marked by a unique spirit of co
operation. Mrs. B. M. Boykin report
ed for the Federated Women’s Clubs
of Atlanta—severai in number—
sketching briefly the salient features
of their work. For example, the
women of the city were going out to
Camp Gordon in the afternoons to
mend the men’s clothing and to teach
them how to do their own sewing;
the Daughters of the American Revo
lution had organized to teach the col
ored women to knit for their own sol
diers, the School of Oratory had or
ganized a glee and mandolin club: Mrs.
E. 8. Jackson promised a huge Christ
mas pagrant to be given both in the
city and the camp, ete. The transpor
tation committee reported the num
ber of automobiles lent by citizens to
take convalescent soldiers for a ride
in the afternoons and to carry volun
teer entertainers back and forth to
the camps. The entertainment com
mittee told of so many concerts,
skows, readings. impersonations, etc.,
that I could not tabulate them; a rep
resentative of the local drama league
said that the needs of the camp had
revived his society, and they had a
repeuoire of plays which would last
all winter; the secretary of the He
brew Association in the camp describ
~d how the peoile of Jewish faith in
Atlanta had brought about a hundred

they met young ladies of their own

that Hebrew scldiers should have

splendid manner in wh' g the Young

the facilities of its buildings at his
disposal. At that point the secretary
of the Knights of Columbus sprang te

the fine spirit of the” Young Men's

his observations to a close with the
following statement:
“The story of Atlanta's relationship
to the new army, how the city is
meeting its obligation, more intent
upon serving than upon the gains of
commerce, is merely etched. Ido not
know whether any community near a
camp or cantonment is doing more or
better work than Atlanta, but what 1
saw made me proud of the men and
women who are exemplifying democ

is the story of a Maryland judge who

) Liquor in bone-dry Georgia?
. Don’t ask us. Read the story as it
was printed in The Washington Times
last Friday:
BALTIMORE, Nov.: 22.—During
his recent visit to Atlanta, Judge
Oscar Leser, of the Maryland appeal
tax commission, made some. inqui
ries, to gratify a personal curiosi
ty, regarding the operation of the
bone-dry law in the South.
The inquiry was pertinent because
of the total exclusion of liquor of
all kinds from prohibition States.
“I was not looking for a drink in
Atlanta,”” said Leser, ‘and I should
’ have to have been a very thirsty
man to have swallowed a drop of
‘ the stuff which the bootleggers were
retailing.
| “l 1 was told that this retail price
~ was $3.50 per one-half gint, or
about four drinks for a healthy man.
At this rate the chap who bought
the stuff paid nearly a dollar for
each drink. Carrying the calculation
still further, the price per gallon was
~ §56, and, I was told, the stuff was
bad. It Bvlongnd to the brand which

true, but it tells the story.
““The cost of distilling reasona
bly good whisky is less than 50
cents a gallon. One can ralculate,
therfore, the enormous profit on each
gallon of whisky sold in Atlanta.
Of course, fircat risks are taken,
for the bootleggers have to dodge
the special agents of the Federal
Government, as well as the local po
lice, in am%gf:llnf their goods into
the city. While I was in Atlanta a
bootlegger was sent to the peniten

of whisky.

only Georgia products were on the

~ WASTED!
40 HOURS EVERY DAY'!
In Atlanta more than 2,450 telephone calls are made every
day to ask Information for telephone numbers already listed in
the directory.
This is more than 38 per cent of all the Information . calls
made daily. Each ot these calls consumes more than one minute
and is unnecessary because the caller could secure the information
with less trouble by looking in the book. :
Almost two days of valuable time could be saved in Atlanta
every day if telephone users would look in the directory before
calling Information.
Another result would be to improve our Information service
by relieving the operators and the equipment of this unnecessary
burden. ' ~
This wasted time is largely your time, but we would like to
help you save your share.’ It will enable us to serve you better,
and any conservation of time, money or energy, contributes in
directly to winning the war.
If your telephone directory has been misplaced, call the busi
ness office and ask for another one.
Look in the book for telephone numbers before calling In
formation.
This is very little trouble and means the saving of invaluable '
time—almost two whole days every day.
