Spring Rumors—
E ERYONE has bcen wondering
what we are to do from now
on until summer, in a social way.
For the past sevéral years, you
know, opera week has taken up
this time, some weeks before the
‘fateful six days being devoted to
preparation and some weeks after
ward to recuperation—and by
then ‘twas summer and the porch
‘parties began.
This year a yawning void looms
up between holiday season and hol
s#day season, because of whieh, as
aforesaid, everyone is wondering
what’s to harpen. Now, I have
heard of various speculations and
enterprises.
They have all a paying side and
@& patriotic side, of course—and
‘most are in the embryo state as
‘yet. Yet I feel justified in pre
dicting that there will be some
thing doing in a social way—not to
*“take the place of opera,” as one
‘woman said-—but to fill up the time
as pleasantly and as profitably as
possible—now that we lack the
opera week, wanich lack nothing can
fully supply.
One of these rumors concerns a
great pageant which may-—or may
not—be presented, but if it is, will
be a novel and gorgeous undertak
ing. Let’s pull for it, anyway, and
maybe the ladies who have it in
mind' will be encouraged to “carry
on.”
SR n
Next Best to Opera—
ANOTHER rumor I have caught
of a possible spring event con
cerns—Caruso!
Someone told a friend of hers (or
his) who told a friend of mine—or
perhaps an enemy, for this may ggt
me into trouble—that Caruso has
declared his intention of making a
personal visit'to Atlanta after opera
is over in New York—just because
he wants to come.
Furthermore, he is reported to
have said that he would bring some
of the Metropolitan stars down
with him! Now, I can’t say really
whether the great Caruso would
ping for us or not—fear that he
would not. But I take it that At
lanta would be much pleased over a
plain little sociable visit of Caruso
and somo of the rest of 'em, “just
for a friendly chat and a cup of
tea,” y’know, opera or no opera.
How about it?
oo fi &
Military Ball—
N OW my guess, as to the way
‘M. lots of this “open-date” time
will be filled up, will be with pa
triotic parties, the military ball
of the coming week being a good
example to follow. Indeed, I be
lieve there are two or three
other benefit balls already an
'nounced. the National League en
tertainment at the Capital City to
be the first.
A unique feature of this affair
will be the fact that the $1 en
trance fee is to cover all expenses.
Jugt think of that—when most ben
efits cost much more to get out of,
than to get into. And the ladies in
charge are determined tc give
full value for the dollar’s entrance
fee, too—with numerous promising
details already worked out.
The First Lady of Georgia will
be a sponsor and a dozen or two
of Atlanta’s leading women—lead
fng in all things that help to
make Atlanta what Atlanta is to
day—wil' act as sponsors.
Mrs. Bryan and Mrs. Kiser, who
have helped so many strangers in
our midst to get a home and fire
side in this crowded town, are the
ladies directly in charge of the
forthcoming ball. And if only those
who have received a helping hand
from the league will lend a helping
hand to this enterprise the Capital
City Club will be crowded—and
then some. :
After the National League ball,
there will be a Valentine ball—
guite a 2 while after—fully long
‘pnough to recuperate from this one

Lieutenant Strohbar,
of the Officers’ Reserve Corps,

Standing with her is Miss
Elizabeth Hawkins, a sister
of the bride and. one of the
debutantes of the seasom, in
Atlanta.
Mrs. Strobhar was Miss
Mary Hawkins, daughter of
Mr, and Mrs. W, E. Hawkins,

was a charming event of re

home of the bride’s parenmts,

get at least one new sprlng hat and

Exit Rice and Old Shoe—
A N absolutely new wedding joke .
has been invented. The law
of necessity, which forbids the use
of rice and old shoes, inspired two
clever young women to invent this
new stunt for imparting an ap
pearance of merriment to the mar
riage service—or rather to the awe
ful pause between the marriage
service and the departure of the
bridal couple to parts unknown,
It happened at the Hawkins-
Strobhar nuptials, and the first in
timation of anything wrong came
when Mary finally slipped away
and up the stairs, fully five min~
utes before the train was due te
leave—giving herself “ample time”
to change from white satin to
brown velour—or whatever is was
~—in the manner of brides. . . .
But when she got to her room.'l.
bit flurried and nervous, and found
that the gown and hat which had
been so carefully placed out, he
fore the wedding, was gone with
out a trace, the fun began. 3 ‘f'
Of course it didn't look like fun
then, with the bride and all the in
timate friends upstairs with her,
rushing hither, thither and yonm,
pulling out dresser drawers, w
opening closet doors and looking
under the beds and apeculatln';‘ot‘\
which one of the men servants, the
maid servants had stolen theg go
ing-away costume. »
But it was fun to two of the dlif~
gent searchers at that. After
twenty minutes of frantic search
and nothing found, the party gave
,nip_the ‘train and the going-away
‘costume and all sat down to rest
and decided on further action.
Then' and then only did Mrs.
Arthur Clark and Caroline Blount
throw off the mask of lnno%
and tell where the traveling o
had been secreted. :‘ |
“And made us miss the tr;%
reproachfully spake the br}de.:"‘ri
But it was not so bad as t
course, for the practical jokers'
verified their suspiclions of "
train’s being two hours late, as
usual, before they hid the bride's.
costume.
