Quite the most extensive—decidedly
the most handsome—and altogether the most
compelling array of smart millinery ever as
sembled on the floors of this institution.
To the buyers of women's headdress throughout
the southeastern territory we extend a cordial invitation,
also request that they honor the occasion with their
presence.
We are unable to recall the time when more importance
could be attached to visiting the market, and with this fact
oo in mind we anticipate the largest assembly of buyers in the
history of our city. ’

Notes in Brief
C. J. Williamson, buyer of the dry‘
goods department of A, M. Robinm)nl
& Co., is in New York buying all the
merchandise that he can contract for.
Mr. Willlamson will return to Atlanta
some time during the coming week.
A letter received from Mr. William
son says that dry goods are very
high in the Kastern markets and some
of the mills are alloting about 20 per
cent to the buyers on their purchases
of a year ago,
M. L. Crawford, Southwest Georgia
and Florida man, came in Saturday
with a grip full of orders, feeling fine
and smiles galore.
Claude Smith, L. B. Robinson ana
W. J. Hayes remained in the house
all week and all report that business
was exceedingly good.
Chris Irby and A. J. Hulsey came in
Saturday morning with plenty of
good-gized orders,
.
Ridley-Yates Co. Are
P d for Spring
Plenty of merghandise has been
bought by the Ridley-Yates Company,
and they will be able to take care of
the needs of their customers unless
something unforeseen should happen.
Shipments are coming in, but not as
fast as would be liked. ¢
This house bas a good showing on al
lines. All the men are out on the road
and are sending In plent of nice bust
ness,
to the larger numbers as the season
progresses.
“There has been some apprehension
on the part of out-of-town merchants
this year. They realize the great con
gestion of traffic and want to make
sure of deliveries. Personally Tdo not
think that we will“have any trouble
from this source.
“We are well supplied on all num-'
bers, better than we have ever heen
in previous vears; so we can take care
of the needs of our customers easily.
“Our foreladies,” continued Mr. Ros
ser, “are now in New York with our
resident buyer there. They will look
over the markets and will return in
time for the opening. These ladies
were sent to!New York so that they
might see things first hand and there
by be in a better position to give ad
vice to pur customers.”
The outlook for spring is one of the
best that Atlanta has ever had, ac
cording to Mr. Rosser. There is no
need for scare or panic, everything in
the millinery markets is running
smooth, and plenty of merchandise
will be on hand to take care of the
retail merchant.
Mr. Fosser advises merchants to
‘buy early and a little heavier than in
| pervious ygars, as there is a possi
bility of a shortage later on in the
}leuson.

Hamilton-Carhartt - Manager Re
turns From Three Weeks' Visit
to Western Factories.
E. R. Partridge, manager of the At~
lanta office of the Hamilton-Carhartt
Overall Company, returned last
Thursday from a trip over the West
ern part of the United States, where
he has been visiting the different
branches of the company.
Mr. Partridge has hung up a record
for fast traveling, especially during
the present conditions of the rail
roads. He left Atlanta December 81,
1917, and went to Dallas, Texas, from
‘there to Fort Worth, then on to EI
il’aao. visiting the factories as he
went. Leaving El Paso he journeyed
to L.os Angeles, Cal, and then up to
San Franeisco, Portland, Oreg., Seat
tle, Wash., and from that point into
Vancouver, British Columbia. Re
turning, he came by the way of Kan
sas City, Mo. g
“l am dead tired,” said Mr. Part
ridge Friday, when seen by The Fir
ing Line editor. “I have{lone nothing
but travel for the past three weeks. I
have to recuperate now.”
He sald that conditions all over the
West were better than he had ever
seen them and that money was very
plentiful. Everything is booming.
Pusiness is good at the Atlanta of
fice and all indications are that the
coming spring and summer will see‘
the best in the history of this office.

Help on Shutdown
l Business with W. B. Floding is just
about three times as good as it was
during the corresponding period a year
ago, according to Mr. Ffioding, and the
!tknx'lnok is now as bright as it has ever
peen.
i Of course there is always “the fly in
the ointment,”” and there is one in Mr.
Floding’s. His trouble {s the shortage
of help.
' “The help problem with me,” said
Mr. Floding, “is the one dark spot. I
am in need at the present time of ma
chine hands, handgirls, general workers,
and girls who can sew. The forced
shutdown that we have just undergone
has taken some of my help. We were
{closed five days, as was every other
| factory, that in itself would not have
been 50 bad, for I am as patriotic as
the next man, but quite a number of
my help have failed to return. I sup
pose that some of them will show up
next Tuesday, anyway, I hope so.”
“I have been thrown back on my im
mediate orders on account of the suut
down, but expect that I will catch up
early the coming week."”

Representative of Daniel Drug
Co. Says Castor Oil Is Best
Lubricant. .
A new lubricant ig now being used
by the Government for its airplane
engines, according to a representative
}of the John B. Daniel Drug Com
‘pany, one of the oldest wholesale
pharmaceutical houses in the South,
and it is castor oil.
“The French were the first to dis
cover that ordinary machine oils
tended to solidify at high altitudes,”
said this representative, “and for a
long time this was one of the big
problems for the airplanes. It was
certainly discovered that the only lu
bricant that would not solidify or
harden in high altitudes is castor oil.
The United States Government re
cently put in its order for 50,000 gal
lons and it was discovered that there
was not that much oil for delivery in
all the mills of America put together.
“Our own house had a car being
loaded in New Jersey for shipment to
Atlanta when the big Government or
der for castor oil came through. Itis
hardly necessary to add that we did
not get this particular car.
“It is difficult for the layman to un
derstand the vital part being played
in the war by staple drugs and chem
icals, and yet no other field is con
