take up in conjunction with a repre

office of the Red Cross the details of
the organization of Junior Red Cross
work in the schools of Atlanta and
the two counties, in order to start
Red Cross work in the schools on the
broadest possible basis from the very
beginning of the campaign which
starts on Tuesday. These plans of or
ganlzation were gone into thoroughly
by the chapter school committee at a
‘meeting Friday afternoon in Profes
sor Wardlaw's office.
' As Atlanta is the city where the
Red Cross division office is located it
is especially desirable that the At
lanta schools should take the lead n
IJunlor Red Cross work, and Profes
sor Wardlaw {s particularly anxious
to have the children take advantage
of the opportunities offered by this
work as soon as possible,
In addition to their share of the
refugee garments which are to be
made by all the schools, the Atlanta
schools have been requested by one
of the officers of the 307th United
I>Stm.es Engineers to make 1,650 khaki
gun covers for his reglment. As this
regiment is statloned at Camp Gordon
it is especially fitting that the At
lanta children should be asked to do
this.
Between 15,000 and 20,000 refugee
garments out of the total allotment
of 400,000 have been assigned to the
Southern Division, and Miss Sally
Stephens, assistant director of junior
membership, announced Saturday that
approximately 1,500 pinafores have
already been distributed in this divi
slon. There are ten different kinds
of garments and each school auxiliary
organized is allotted a certaln share
of one kind. All of the garments are
cut by a professional cutter in the
Southern Rivision warehouse on
James street, in order to insure a per
fect cut, and are distributed from
there to the schools as they are or-
Ignnlzod for junior work.

The report of the division ware

that 300 boxes of raw material were
received during the week, that 334
boxes of supplies were sent to chap

received from them. Invoices to the

Campaign to Raise $30,000 in
in Atlanata To Be Started
Tuesday, Feb. 19,
That the Young Women's Christian
Association has broadened the scope
of its work to a remarkable degree,
both locally and nationally, during the
latter part of its 50 years of effort, is
a fact not widely known among the
general publie. e
Few outside of those who have been
more or less directly interested in the
association’s work have taken the
trouble to enlighten themselves on the
‘subject and consequently among
these there is only a vague idea of
'what it has accomplished based on
tt.}le earlier history of the organiza
on.
I Its primary object at the time of
organization, as well as at the pres
ent time, was the physical and spirit
ual welfare of young women and
girls.
While the problems and purposes of
the Y. W, C. A. are practicaly identi
cal with those formed at its organi
zation, like everything else that
changes in the course of 50 years,
these problems are met in more prac
tical and modern ways and more on
the ground of humanity.
An enormous number of girls in
this country have already gone into
ne wpositions and many into new en
vironments,-as the result of the war
one estimate placing the number at a
million. Naturally, under such cir
cumstances, the need of adjustments
to meet the new conditions is imper
ative. For instance, 1,500 girls were
employed in a munitions fdetory in a
small Middle Western city, where
Ithere was no place for them to stav.
The Government reported to the Y.
W. C. A, that these girls were sleep
ing three in a bed and working in
three shifts, so the beds were never
empty. Immediate arransements were
made for the erection of barracks by
the Y. W, C. A, where the girls had
clean and comfortable quarters.
In Atlanta the Y. W. C. A. rooms
on the fourth floor of the Peachtree
Arcade and the Hostess House at
Camp Gordon produce the most con
vincing evidence of the work the lo
!eal association is doing. In the club
rooms are to be found everything that
one would naturally look for in a
place of this kind—reading rooms,
restrooms, gymnasium, bathrooms,
cafeterla and a bright, sunny atmos
phere. Among the hundreds of girls
who visit the rooms daily are mem
bers of the association. strangers who
always seek out the Y. W. C. A. first,
because they know it is the right kind
of a place to go, and many who may
have plenty of places to go. but who
enjoy the atmosphere of the Y. W.
C. A. and its wholesome associations.
Tt is a place where anyone is welcome
at any time.
The Hostess House at Camp Gor
don was donated by the national
‘board without asking any contribu
‘tion from Atlanta. It is the only
place at the camp where the wives
mothers and daughters of the soldiers
can meet them, and it has been given
high praise on every hand. It s
practically self-supporting.

Children Must Learn

FORT COLLINS, COLO,, Feb.

make their home they must learn
our ways and our customers,” de- ‘
clared Judge , Boulton, of the
County Court, on Friday. “I pro
pose to do my part in seeing that
they do it.” ‘. o
The remarks of the court came
as a result of George Whitman
being arrested on the charge of
failing to send one of his children
to school.
The defendant announced that
he was sending all but one to the
public schools, and that one was
being sent to a private German
school.
Judge Boulton issued the order
that the child be taken from the
private school and placed in the
public school.
“It is necessary that you for
eigners accustom yourselves to
American ways and methods. You
- come here to enjoy the prosperity
~ and freedom of the land, and it
I is necessary that you assume the
~ ways of your adopted country. If
‘ you follow the same methods you
did in your former home and edu
cate your children in the same
way, it would ‘not be long until
conditions would be the same as
they were there. The children
must attend American schools and
learn English just as do all the
other children.
“Private schools for the teach
ing of German and Russian or
other foreign customs are not in
line with American ideals, and as
far as I can I propose to see that
the children are sent to the public
schools.”
Judge Boulton has been follow
ing the school situation closely
~ and has caused many a parent to
be brought into court because the
children were not sent to the
public schools as required by law.

they were getting mor eout of the war

State Association Seeks Remedy

. Members of the Georgia State Au

Ipuah vigorously the campaign against
‘aniomobile thieves, working espe
clally to bring about the passage of
an ordinance which will provide a
check on all sales of second-hand
cars and make the purchaser of a
stolen car liable unless he has used
care in assuring himself of the sell
er's title to the car.
Councilman Al Martin, of the Sec
ond Ward, will introduce at the next
meeting of Council an ordinance to
be drawn by the City Attorney. It
will provide that the seller of a used
car must exhibit to the purchaser a
bill of sale or other proof of owner
ship and that the purchaser must see
such proof before closing the deal.
The ordinance also will provide
that every garage rented in Atlanta
must be reported at once to the po
lice department. The auto thieves, it
is said, make a practice of renting
mall back-alley garages, storing a
stolen car there and leaving it until
th: police are less active in search
ing for it. These garages, too, are
used as workshops where the iden
tity of a car may be completely
charged. 1t is probable that proprie
tors of repair shops and storage gar
ages may be required to make re
ports of daily business, make of cars
received, and other information.
W. Tom Winn, an officer of the
Anatomobile Association, is working to
serure the passage of the ordinance,
to which he expects no opposition. He
believes that if Atlanta will take the
lead the State will follow in the
movement to protect automobiles.

Mother! Your child isn’t naturally
