LIGHT BEHIND THE DARK FIGURE
o HERE are fifteen hundred
million human beings on
this earth,
In a hundred and twenty
years not one of them will
be here, Where will they
—— have gone? What becomes
of the power 1n the fifteen hundred million
human engines when the body wears out and goes
back into the ground?
Every human being is interested in that ques
tion, for in a few days, months or years, each of
us will e still, while his friends about him say
pleasant things that he will not hear.
:v & e
What is there on the other side of this big
black figure that we call death?
This question men and women ask selfishly for
themselves as death approaches.
They ask it with passionate, desperate yearn
ing. for those that have left them and gone be
yond sight and hearing,
What can help the mother whose child death
has taken?
What can help the father whose promising boy
has gone and made the world horribly empty?
ONLY FAITH; belief taught in childhood, or
soquired later; the feeling of certainty that the
thing we long for we shall have—that behind
death’s black robe a bright light shines forever.

We publish here two poems by Ella Wheeler
Wiloox, the first written just after the death of
her husbhand, the other one year later.
The first poem tells the pitiful story of yearn
ing and uncertainty the second comforting be
lief, more to be treasured in distress than any
scientifio ‘‘proof.”’
] & &
This is the first poem, written in 1916:
You Promised Me.
(AUI holy books of earth, all churches and all
creeds
Are based on spirt miracles.
Moses, Elias, Matthew, Mark and John,
Pawl and Cornelius, Buddah, Swedenborg—
All talked with Angels. Yes, and many more.)
That was a mighty promise that you made me—
not once,
But many a time,
Whenever we discussed the topic death—
You promised me that were such things possible
In God’s vast Universe,
You would send back a message to my listening
soul.
Now am I listening with bated breath.
Always on earth you kept your promises. Why!
never once .
Through all the years, the wonderful great years
We walked together
Did you forego your word and break a pledge
However trivial its purport.
Surely that habit of a loyal mind endures;
Surely that soul of yours
Has not been changed so utterly because it laid
aside
The body which had died—
That it f};rgets a solemn promise made to me
Not once, but many a time.
Why ! such forgetfulness would be a crime
Against love, faith and hope, the precious three,
It could not be.
So am I waiting, watching—in the light—and
listening in the dark—
For any sight, or sound, you may have sent.
go do I lean and hark—
Night in, day out—
Nor will Flet my starved and eager spirit doubt
Or sink in discontent
Because no answer comes.
. You promised me—some day, some way
Will open for you, dear, to keep your word.
So many eyes have seen—so many ears have
~ heard.
Moses, Elias, Matthew, Mark, and John—
Paul and Cornelius, Buddha, Swedenborg—
All talked with Angels.
Science, which once denied, now patiently in
vestigates.
I do not seek alone.
And I will knock upon the door of heaven
And shake God’s windows with the hands of
prayer, . :
Asking for those old Angels, wise with centuries
Of large experience, to come to you,
Oh, my beloved, and to show you how
To keep your promise, made in solemn faith—
To bridge the River Death,
And rend the veil between.
So many ears have heard—so many eyes have
seen—
: Why not mine own?
I do not seek alone—
You Promised me.

Death is but a cloak of black shutting out a
brighter light than living eyes have seen.
Many that sorrow will find comfort in the two
poems by Ella Wheeler Wilcox on this page.
Read the second poem, written one year later,
when Mrs. Wilcox had become convinced that
death does NOT separate where the chain of af
fection is strong enough.
You learn as you read that the poetess believes
that human thought and love can reach beyond
the grave—that those departed can come back,

Triumphs.
At last, at last, the message! Definite
As dawn, that tells the night has gone away.
The Silence has grown eloquent with it—
The Silence that late filled me with dismay,
So dumb it was. Triumphant now I sit
So near to God and you I need not pray;
For only words of thankfulness were fit ’
Not what IS, but what we BELIEVE, makes us
happy or unhappy.
Ihe mind is free. Happy those that believe in
the accomplishment of the soul’s desire.
For this #tate wherein I dwell to-day.
You live, you love me! You have heard my call
And answered it in your own way. The proof
So satisfies the soul of me, were all
The hosts of earth to henceforth stand aloof
Till I recanted—my reply were this—
One men call dead has sent me messages,
City Life
Oh, my Beloved! Through these months, ke
ears,
3 {now you might have reached me sooner
here
Had I not blurred the trail by storms of tears;
And yet, how could, how could I help it, dear?
Now you have found a way to make God’s
spheres
Seem very intimate and very near.
And radiant my lonely path appears,
The light you cast upon it is so clear.
I stand victorious at the longed-for goal
With open vision where I once was blind}
And cry aloud to every suffering soul:
“Pray without ceasing—seek and ye shall find.
Though science sneer and school and church
condemn—
Your dead swell near-~you may commune with
them.” !
—EIUa Wheeler Wilcoz, 1917,
e * >
You that read this second poem may say, ™I
don’'t believe it.”’
If the spirit could talk without a body, heas
without ears, Divine Wisdom would not make
bodies or waste time feeding them.
The body is to the spirit what the chisel and
hammer are to the sculptor. The spirit that leaves
one body must find another before it goes on with
its work."’
Perhaps you are right. Perhaps Ella Wheeler
Wilcox is right.
The important thing for happiness is that each
should create and then believe the theory or con.
dition that brings happiness with it,
& * e "
Each young mother, holding her new baby, be
lieves that she is taking care of the most wonder
ful human being ever born, An excellent belles,
good for her and better for the baby.
Who would disturb it?
The savage believes that he will spend his time
after death hunting, and here he hunts all the
better for that belief—a good belief for him.
Religions generally have taught that the good
are rewarded and the bad are punished. We know
that it is so on earth, why should it not be so elses
where?
A good belief in any case, good because it prov
motes goodness and discourages badness.
'e o &
You may be happy, as Ella Wheeler Wilcox Is,
because you believe that one dead has come back,
kept his promise and is now more or less near a$
hand keeping you company. 3
If that is what you want, you are wise to be
lieve it—if you CAN believe it.
Or you may believe that this earth, an abode of
miserable imperfection, suffering and disappoint.
ments, is unworthy of the one you love. You may
be glad that he is gone, hope that he will never
come back, and wait patiently, taking your chance
of being able to follow him.
If that is your idea, and you can BELIEVE it
so, so much the better for you.
8 * 2
Some find comfort in absolute faith, in a Power
that rules the universe, wholesale and retail, bal
ancing in their journey suns a million times big
ger than our own, counting the sparrows as they
fall, planning in advance the life of each person,
and writing in a book the deeds of each one,
Many are made better and happier by that be-
Hes in an individual, always-present God. The be
lief is what they want, no one should disturb them.
Others believe that cosmic power rules through
law; that is creation infinite, as in a tiny nation of
earth, rule by law unchanging is the thing destr.
able.
For the man with a sufficiently high respect
for law, able to do his duty despite the fact thas
no recording angel is writing down his words—
that is the good belief and thé one for him to cul
tivate,
e * & m
The important thing is for each of us to put his
mind on the highest and noblest thing that he is
capable of believing, and then STICK TO IT,
The other important thing is for each of us so
respect the belief of all others.
Treat a man's religion as you would the name
of his mother. It is sacred to him, and if you are
a good citizen, it is sacred to you.
Work to INCREASE KNOWLEDGE, make the
public schools better, spread light in the darkness
—and you will have done your duty,
‘“‘GIVE LIGHT AND THE PEOPLE WILL
FIND THEIR WAY.,” :
While they are groping in the shadow, do noth.
ing to disturb beliefs that comfort them wihily
waiting for a clearer light,
