Woman Balks at Big
Rattler as Co-Tenant
And Qgcides to Move
The oath of allegiance and duty
taken by the guardians of Atlanta's
peace Adoes not Include pghsonnl con
fliot with rattlesnakés. is {8 part
of the reason why Mrs. (~ R. Leath
ers, in a Alstinctly agitated frame of
mind, Is planning to remove herself,
family and household effects from the
frame dwelllng at No. 180 Davis
street, which also is occupied by a
rattleanake.
Mrs. Leathers' first idea was to
take out a digpossessory wurrant for
the ilntruder, who had crawled into
the house and secreted himself in a
closet. She called on the constabu
lary and OMeers Barfleld and Mal
colm responded. By the time they
arrived the rear seotion of the snake
had been fphlnly observed tralling up
a flight of stairs into the attic.
“Go on up and kill it,” Mry, Leath
ers directed. “It's only about six feet
lonf. It has about a hatful of rattles
on {ts tall”
This interesting intelligence was re
calved without cheers by Messrs. Bar
fleld and Malcolm, In a duly stuffed
specimen in a glass case these detalls
might have aroused some enthusiasm
in their hearts, Being loose in a dark
attie, full of beams and nooks and
crannies, the subject desoribed by
Mrs. Leathers had a distinotly de
pressing effect on an inelination to
study natural hmorx at close range.
The constabulary debated,
“Let's call Dr, Martin,” n.gnltod
Malcolm., He referred to M. C. Mar
tin, brigadier general of the North
Georgla Brlg:do of the United Con
federate Veterans, a man of preven
valor in the flsld and a physician ao
oustomed to cope with Tlnk and blue
snakes and lizards of indeterminate
hue in the alcoholic ward at the police
station.
Dr. Martin was invited to corhe out
and chloroform the rattlesnake. He
came, bringing the desired soporifio,
but found the attic a place peculiarly
undesirable for the administration of
anesthetios.
Dr. Martin neither anesthetized the
reptile nor removed it, Matead of awn
operation he gave Mrs. Leathers some
professiona! advice.

to settle him, or at least discourage

Mrs, Leathers, who had been cer

of getting the snake to move, has de
