With $25,000 more in the cashbox than
the $450,000 set as the minimum, At
lanta Wednesday was completing her
united war work campaign. There was
ho actlve canvass, but the executive
committee was rounding up pledges
made and not called for, and receiving
contributions from many individuals
and firms which for one reason or an
<sher had not been represented in for
rwer lists. The headquarters will re
main open all day. It was estimated
that the total receipts and pledges, with
duplications eliminated, would reach
$475,000,
After Wednesday all business will be
handled and contributions receipted for
by the permanent headquarters of the
united war work, No. 21 Peachtre Ar
cade. Checks should be made payable
to J. 8. Kennedy, treasurer. Payments
on pledges should be made at that ad
dress, and it is urged that all subscrib
ers pay pledges promptly and help save
expense of collection, so that more
money may go direct to the real work of
the seven organizations,
W. R. C. Smith, general chairman of
the campaign and president of the Ro
tary Club, was presented with a silver
loving cup Tuesday afternoon at the
luncheon of the club, in token of his
work in the big drive. The presentation
address was made by J. K. Orr, chair
man of the State organization in the
campaign. The Rotarians, to a man,
nad stood by their president in the cam
paign, and the greater part of the cen
tral organization was drawn from this
club.
Ely R. Callaway, State director for the
united war work, Wednesday issued a
final appeal to Georgia to put over as
large an oversubscription as possible and
thus win for Georgia the privilege of
naming a second war work hut in
France. Reports showed that the State
Wednesday had oversubseribed her
quota by $304,186 and ten counties had
riot reported.

Physiclans and druggists are elated
over the fact that they have at last
found a genuine and dependable remedy
for colds, sore throat, influenza and la
grippe. For years they have depended
shiefly upon the old style calomel, which
is certainly fine, but unfortunately many
people would not take it because of its
nausgeating and dangerous qualities,
Now that the pharmaceutical chemists
have perfected a nausealess calomel,
called “Calotads,” whose medicinal vir
tues are vastly improved, the doctors
and druggists are claiming that Calotabs
are the ideal remedy to abort a cold
over night and cut short an attack of
sore throat or la grippe. They are also
finding it most effective as the first step
in the treatment of pneumonia,
One Calotab on the tongue at bed time
with a swallow of water—that's all. No
salts no nausea nor the slightest inter
ference with your eating or your work

The First Vaughan Was of Short Stat-'

Class Today. {
Probably few of the name of Vaughan |
are aware of the fact that their name is}
akin to the surnames Little and Petit, |
all of which mean small of stature; and, |
though many of the men of the family |
md:‘,\" are in the six-foot class, the sup- |
position is that the first who bore lhe"
name was a man marked by his short
ness. The name is of Welsh origin, and
the original form was Vychan. The
Vaughans of County Salop in lngland
olrim-.descent from Tudor Trevor, the
common aneestor of many a distin
guished family of Welsh origin. Another
distinguished Vaughan family, those
from Penmaen, Wales, take their origin
from one Seissyllt, lord of Mathavarn, in
the fourteenth century through Jenkin
Vychan, whose son, John, adopted the
name Vychan or Vaughan.
One of the most distinguished of the
early settlers of the name in this coun
try was Major Willlam Vaughan, wno,
though of Welsh extraction, was bred
in London under Sir Josiah Child. He
went to Portsmouth, N, H.,, as a young
man in employ of a man named Cutts, |

1668, married his employer's daughter,
Margaret Cutts Thelr children were
named Eleanor, . who married Richard
Waldron; Mary <€utts, George, Bridget,
Margaret, Abigaii and Elizabeth
Another New England family of the
name was foundcd by Anthony Vaughan,
who came to the New World, so the
story goes, with two brothers, John and
Daniel. They settled in Nova Scotia ;nAII
later in Virginia. Anthony had a son,}
Anthony, who was born in \'irmnm,{
lived in Rhode Island and died in Ches-,
ter, Nova Scotia. . His descendants are
to be found in Massachusetts and else
where in this country.
ptill another connection of Vaughans
traces descent to Benjamin Vaughan,
who was born in 1679, His son, Samuel
Vaughan, was a wealthy Eng'ish mer

then in London. He married Sarah Hal

Benjamin, John, William and Chartes
Benjamin, wHo was born in Jamaica in

his brother, died a bachelor in London

Atlanta's railway telegraphers feel
that the joke is on them if their inter

According to local staisticians, the
award as applied to local telegraphers,
would mean a considerable decrease in
wages as well as withdrawal of many
hard-won privilezes from the men,
The award, as received here, provides
for a 13 cents per hour inhcrease over
wages paid on January 1, 191§, and a
865-day year without vacations ind
without extra pay for Sundays or holi
days For the men who received $94 a
month on January 1 and who have since
been increased to $113.75 per month, the
new award would mean a reduction in
wages from b 8 cents per hour to 5l J-4
cents in addition to the abolition of the
l(\\'u‘\\vvl\'s holiday every vear with pay
and lengthening of the Sunday work
lxi.v\ or abolition of extra pay, and
