After Wednesday all business will be

The First Vaughan Was of Short Stat
ure, Though Many Are in the Six-Foot
Class Today.
Probably few of the name of Vaughan
arec aware of the fact that their name is
akin to the surnames Little and Petit,
all of which mean smalil of stature; and,
though many of the men of the family
today are in the six-foot class, the sup
position is that the first who bore the
name was a man marked by his short
ness. The name is of Welsh origin, and
the original form was Vychan. The
Vaughans of County Salop in England
clsim descent from Tudor Trevor, the
common ancestor of many a distin
guished family of Welsh origin. Another
distinguished Vaughan family, those
from Penmaen, Wales, take their origin
from one Seissyllt, lord of Mathavarn, in
the fourteenth century through Jenkin
Vychan, whose son, John, adopled the
name Vychan or Vaughan.
One of the most distinguished of the
early settlers of the name in this coun
try was Major William Vaughan, wno,
though of Welsh extraction, woa@ bred
in London under Sir Josiah Child. He
went to Portsmouth, N. H., as a young
man in employ of a man named Cutts,
and before many years had passed, in
1668, married his employer's daughter,
Margaret Cutts Their children were
named Eleanor, who married Richard
Waldron; Mary Cutts, George, Bridget,
Margaret, Abigail and Elizabeth,
Another New England family of the
name was founded by Anthony Vaughan,
who came to the New World, so the
story goes, with two brothers, John and
Daniel. They settled in Nova Scotia and
later in Virginia Anthony had a son,
Anthony, who was born in Virginia,
lived in Rhode Island and died in Ches
ter, Nova Scotia His descendants are
to be found in Massachusetts and else
where in this country.
Still another connection of Vaughans
traces descent to Benjamin Vaughan,
who was born in 1679. His son, Samuel
Vaughan, was a wealthy English mer
chant, who lived first in Jamaica and
then in London. He married Sarah Hal-
Jowell, of Boston, and had four sons,
Benjamin, John, Willlam and Chartes
Benjamin, whHo was born in Jamaica in
1741, married Sarah Manning, of London.
He was a famous horticulturist. John
setthed in Dhiladeiphia, where he was a
friend of Washington, Franklin and Jef
ferson He never married, and William
his brother, died a bachelor in London
Charles, the fourth brother, settied in
Roston in 1785 and married Frances Ap
thorp He was one of the most wealthy
men of Boston of the day, and built
warehouses, wharves and dwellings, a
brewery andl a flour mill at what was
known as “The Htok,"” near Boston. The
Rev. John A. Vaughan, of Philadelphia,
who took orders in the Ipiscopal Church
was one of his children,
