' filled Wall street, Central avenue and
the tracks behin® the building were
filled with spectwntors.
! Telephone anda electric wires in the
street in front of the building were
. cut, and service interrupted for a con
siderable time,
| The women on the second and third
i floors kept their heads throughout the
| excitement, e'se the danger would
| have been greater. Three girls dashed
linto a big refrigerating room when
| they found themselves hemmed in by
smoke, and, bolting the door to keep
smoke from seeping in, remained
} there until the fire was over,
i All meats and produce on the upper
| floors were destroyed by the fire, but
| the fresh meat stored on the first floor
| was undamaged and regular morning
i deliyeries from these stores were be
lim:‘ Mmade to the retailers in the aft
| ernoon. An inventory is being taken
| to_determine the actual extent of the
damage today. |
| Leaps From Window. ‘
| The last of the women to leave the ‘
| building was Miss Minnie Bartlett,
| No. 69 McAfee street, who jumped
' from a window on the third floor into
:the arms of a fireman on a ladder on
i the Central avenue side. Miss Bart
lett said all of the girls were calm
| when the alarm was sounded, and
that they held their noses or covered
their faces with articles of clothlng‘
to keep from being suffocated by the
smoke.
| Miss Kathleen Teal, No. 3823 Simp
| son street, was one of the last to be
taken from the third floor. Aside
. from a little nervousness from the
| trying ordeal she was perfectly well
ia few minutes later,
| A number of the men and women
| who were rescued from the second
jand third floors were congregated at
:a nearby soda fountain a few min
utes after being taken out of the
Ibuilding. drinking sodas and gayly
i relating their thrilling experiences to
the bystanders,
Several of the girls who took refuge
in one of the big meat coolers were |
taken out after the fire had been put '
out and the smoke had cleared away, 1
and these were little the worse, for
their experiences.
Started on Second Floor.
From all available information, it
appeared at 10 o'clock that the fire
had originated on the second floor, or
probably in the elevator shaft. No
one could say with any degree of cer- ‘
tainty exactly what caused the fire |
but all were agreed that it sprendi
with astonishing rapidity. |
The first sections to be put out of |
commission were the stairways and
the elevator, and this made it impos
‘slhle to go from floor to floor in res
cuing the trapped employees and re
| moving records.
The fire department responded to
Ithe alarm with admirable speed, and
{ it is due entirely to the efforts of the
| iremen and the quickness of the de
| partment in responding that the men
{ and women on the third floor were all
| rescued. Exnressions of admiration
| were hea~d from all quarters of the
| splendid work performecd by the gal
| lant firemen, who put aside all con
sideration of personal safety in the
performance of their duties.
The second and third floors ap
( peared to be completely destroyed,
! the fire raging through those floors
f om 8:45 to 9:45 o'clock. The equip
ment on the first floor was also badly
damaged by fire, smoke and water.
The ventilator on top of the building
was complet-ly destroyed. ‘
| "'Al' of the wires running overhead
!on the Pryor street side were
‘l\\'rm'lfml when the big swinging lad
|<le* was thrown to the third floor for
{ use in resening the men and women
| entrapped there. |
