Although disclosures of a similar

Percentage of Control.
The percentages of control main
tained by the “big five” over the im
portant branches of the meat trade
the statistica being for 1016, were
charged as follows:
Interstate slaughter of caltle, 52.4
per cent; of calves, 79.4; sheep, 86.6;
swine, 63.3; lard production by in
terstate slaughters, 755 per cent; av.
erage monthly stocks of frozen heef
held by interstate slaughters, 95 pei
cent; of sgmoked ham and bacon, 61,16
per cent of dry salt pork, 698 per
cent; of pickled pork, 70.5: of lard,
75.17; receipts of cattle at stockyards
controlled by the “big five,” 649, as
compared with receipts at all yards,
83.1 per cent; beef refrigerator cars,
1 per cent; number of domestl
branch houses operated by interna
tional glaughters, 89 per cent;, branch
house sales of meats by interstate
slaughters, fresh meats, 94.9 per cent;

Control Is Spreading.
The report of the commisrion con
tinues that the control by the “big
five” over poultry, eggs, butter,
cheegd, canned goods, including fish
vegetables, fruit and milk, is “al
ready considerable and is growing.”
The investigation by the ederal
trade commisgsion of the meat indus
try was started in accordance with a
letter February 7, 1917, from Presi
dent Wilson to the cdommission, di
recting an investigation of food
etulfs, so a® to learn the facts bearing
on violationg of the antitrust acts to
the end that proper remedies may be
applied, |
Then the report of the commission
continues, with a detailed account of
the sweeping investigation of the
;mm(»p.u'kmg industry, making spe
| cifie charges against the “hig five.”
