1,600,000 killed in battle and an

the emormous sacrifice of France In

half of the men she put into the fleld

America owes Franca a large debt of
ff‘!ltudo for his herole outpouring of

and also to the peasants of France
who discovered a perfect remedy for
rtcmach, liver and intestinal ailments
. Which is reported to have relieved In
ealculable suffering, prevented many
surgical operations and saved thou
sands of lives. George H. Mayr, a
leading Chicago chemist, imports the
ingredients and sells this remedy in
America under the name of Mayr's

the use of flu masks, which he like
wise recommended:
“People are no longer doubtful as
to the effectiveness of smallpox vae
cination. For ages the whole of Fu
rope would be swept at irregular in
tervals by the plague, but fer the last
decade compulsory vaccination has
been s?ndardlud by the leading ar
mies of the European and American
countries, so that today there Is nc
such thing as dangerous plagues of
smallpox.
“In previous wars people, mostly
soldiers, died by the thousands as a
resuit of typhoid fever epldemics,
while toeday in the army of the Unit
ed States typhold fever 1s unheard of,
as a result of the compulsory inoc
ulution against it
Flu Serum Recommended,
“In taking the antitoxin for these
discases the pioneers were not abso
lutely positive that the results would
always be beneficial, yet they took
them. Today we are aseured that
the serum provided by the State to
prevent Influenza and the complica
tions following can not injure the
body and is indorsed by the leading
medical men of the country, Btill
there are many who, through ignor
ance, superstition or prejudice, re
fuse to take advantage of the offer, at
least to try to protect themselves and
their associates against the dreaded
disease which Is sweeping he coun
try.
“The patlent often says that his
physician does not prescribe the se
rum as a preventive for influenza, so
why take it? Yet the family physi
clan takes the necessary stepy to
nave his entire family baccinated.
To have the added stimulus in the
system is but a protection and a help
to the physical condition. In fact, the
best suthorities of the army and clv
ilian life are agreed that the vaccine
is a preventive of the complications
following influenza. As the ears, eyes
and heart are weakened by the dis
ease, the victim is susceptible to weak
eyes, pleurisy, pneumonia and many
other complications, so that anything
which will flnnghan the weakened

to take it.
The Masks Advisable.
“Many physicians are opposed to
the idea of using flu masks; thus,
the patients are well supported In
their theory that it is a useless im
position and let it go, saying that
‘they will havs to have the discase
‘some day. just as they do the measles

101 wearing a horribl® mask
| “In case of scarlet fover the State
compels that the door leading to the
sick room be covered by a sheet sat
!ur:m-.d with carbolic acid so that the
scales which carry the dreaded con
taglon will be destroyed before leav
ing the room. In the army and navy
camps It was compulsory that flu
masks be worn by people coming In
contact with Influénza cases. As the
141lm~um- is eaused by entrance to the
system through the passages of the
'mouth and nose, and as they can not
‘t-n't-r through a four-ply cushion of
cheese cloth, why not wear the mask
over the lower part of the face—espe
cially mothers and nurses?
“A positive preventive for the epi
demic has not been found, hecause its
‘nrlgln has not been digscovered. The
Rockefelier Foundation and the hy
glenic laboratories have not been able
to produee either, but both indorse
the preventatives or the aemi-preven
tatives which are certainly not injur
fous to the system and are an aid to
the physical development.
Influenza Unnecessary.
“You do not have to have the in
fluenza, and If ygu develop It, it is not
essentialy that ;?‘m develop the com
plications which follow the disease
and from which people die. It is not
the influenza which causes the death
of the person; it is the setting up of
compfications which follow in the
wake of the weakening Jiseake. Pre
vent these and the flu will not be as
deadly nor hold the dread that ge
companies it now, The conditions
over the country are becoming serious
and even though the Government
make the vaccination to prevent the
epidemic compulsory, the “mecessary
time to enable proper State and lm’nll
administration will result in the death
of many people who ean not be ro-‘
' placed.
“The sane and reasonable thing to
do 'ir. the case Is to take every pre
caution to prevent either the disease
or the complications which follow, by
being vaccinated against the influ
enza and wearing flu masks in deal
ing with sick people. Do not believe
that it is sbsolutely essential that
you have the disease and that once
gone through with you®*are free from
danger.”

(By International News Service.)
WASHINGTON, Jan. 25-—With
210,000 unemployed laborers in indus
trial centers for the current week the
situation is becoming serious, accord-
Ing to a statement issued tonight by
the United States Employment Serv
ice g\f the Department of Labor.
Since the signing of the armistice
there has been a steady and consist
ent decrease in the shortages, while
the surplus has been steadily increas
ing. The percentage of cities report
ing a shortage has @®ropped to 13 per
cent, the cities reporting surpluses
has jumped to 44 per cent, and the
citles where the supply equals the de
mand has dropped to 43 per cent. On
December 10, 25 per cent of the citles
were short of laborers, 12 1.2 per cent
reported a surplus and 60 per cent re
ported a supply equal to the demand.
On December 3 there was a total
shortage of labor in industrial cen
ters of 34,000, This shortage has been
wiped out in eight weeks and a sur
plus of 210,000 substituted. i i
New England Mopeful. |
In the New England States the sit- |
uation is hopeful. Boston and Spring
fleld report a supply equal to the
demand, and New Britain, Conn,, re
ports a shortage. Lynn apd Law
rence report a surplus of several
thousand unemployed, but there has
been only a sligh increase in 4he
rumber during the last few weeks, |
In New York State a surplus of la
bor is reported in every large city,
while in New Jersey and Pennsyl
vania the supply about ennals the de
mand. In Cleveland the surplus has
Increased from 40,000 to 60,000 un
employed, with other Ohlo cities re
porting a similar eondition, ‘
Middle West Has Surplus. |
The situation in the Middle West
is far from satisfactory. Detroit hu‘
a surplus of 256,000, Grand Rapids,
Jackson and Flint all report a sur
plus. Illinois-reports surpluses at ul-‘
most every point and the expected
lay-off at the Rock Island arsenal will
affect both Illinols and lowa.
On the Pacific coast and in the
Southern States the situation\is not
80 acute, but a shortage In labor ex
isting in the larger cities of the two
sections is being rapidly reduced and
in quite a few Instances changed into
a surplus.
