Spirit of Revenge Prompts Levia
.
than Shot by Skipper of
Gulf Smack.
ARANSAS PASS, TEXAS, Jan. 26—
Mut for the heroic efforts of the crew
of the fishing smack Lucy May, the
skipper, seven sallors, the vessel and
4,000 pounds of red snapper would have
today been at the bottom of the gulf in
stead of enjoying the hospitalities of
this port.
It was a spirit of revenge on the
part of a hufn swordfish which jeop
ardized the lives of the men when
they were 200 miles out &t sea--a
monster which had been angered by
Captain Tom Sharkey as he salled for
his port with one of the best catches
of the season.
Accordipg to members of the crew
who spent thirty.six hours bailing
water out of the vessel as she limped
4nto the port, the Lucy May had just
lifted nn(‘gmr and spread her salls for
home when the trouble began.
Sallors Are Happy.
she had bee¢n out of port for fif
teen days and the crew had taken a
fine lot of snapper. During the fisn

snapper reefs, had been ’ylaymx about
the ship and taking fish ffom the lines
When the ship got under way the
swordfish followedd In the wake, the
sailors believe, to pick up any food
which might he thrown over. After
folilowing the Lucy May for fully
thirty miles the skipper decided that
it would prove a “Jonah” and took a
eo'tll_glo of shots at it with a rifle,
e sallors declare one of the shots
took effect and that the angry fish
lashed the water to a foam and
charged the vessel The skipper
thought nothing of its action,
Fish Gets Even,
That night, the sallors declare, and
the skipper will not contradiet it, the
\ngry fish swam under the Lacy May
and with its swoeh gslashed a large
h&le in the hull. Parts of the blade
weére found on the edges of the hole
and a plece of it floating in the
water when the leak was discovered
The crew was without extensive re
pairing outfits, and since the hole
was a st some ten feet long running
across two sections of the hull, it
was impossible to fully repair it.
The seven men composing the crew
formed a bucket hrigade and worked
for thirly-six hours without rest, sleep
