Limousine for $24. |
Universal Service Staff Correwondam.i
MAASTRICHT, HOLLAND (by mall),
Some of the features of the great Ger
man retreat through Liege, just south of
this snug Dutch city, and across the
narrow strip of Duteh Limbourg, a few
miles north, would make a corking cur
tain climax for any musical comedy on
Broadway.
Out of the tragedies that have marked
the passing through Kastern Hlat{lum of
the beyten and Soviet-mad Gerthan ar
mies — wholesale looting of the peasants,
murders when resistance was offered
and a few Instances of unspeakable hor
rors—ceptain gems of roaring farce nev
ertheless can be discovered
A few of these Instances of wvalues |
turned topsy-turvy may prove of Im:r—’
est.
With the overturning of thelr nm:-vru'l
Suthority by the reveolution directed from |
Hamburg and Berlin and the beginning |
of the retreat homeward, the individual
German soldier's first care was to pro
vide himself with a little money agalnst
his return to a barrerr and hungry
hearth. 8o he began to sell to the clv
lans whatever of value he could lay
hands on, evidently acting on the theory
that what had been the property of the
Imperial German Government was now
his,
Cars Sold for a Song.
Automobiles were the first to go—for
the wod reason that through lack of
w they were to be left behind anyway
6 lucky soldier-chauffeur who for a
matter of months or years had been the
dumb driven dog of his officer master
promptly tied a red rag around his left
arm, kicked hls officer out of the ton
neau and trundled his car to market,
In Liege, in Louvain, Hasselt and Na
mur German automobiles were offered
for sums that would make a Broadway
car salesman turn faint,
In ldege 1 talked with a Belgilan in
surance man who had bought a closed
limousine with leather upholstery, elec
tric lights and a tidy little electric heat
er for the sum of 100 marks (about $24
American at the before-the-war rate).
1 rode In the car. . Nothing wrong with
it except it badly needed new tires. The
new owner pald 2 marks extra for the
reservation of gas. When that is gone
be'll have to put his pretty German car
in the garage for a few months until
Bas comes agaln on the market.
I'll say he fl’ul a bar?'xun. And the
German chauffeur doubtless Is sure he
furned a neat penny
So many of these cars have been sold
for such ridiculous prices that many
thrifty Dutchmen are climbing over the
frontier to do a little speculating in war
autds. One may predict a hullfuh mAar
ket during the next few weeks.
I have heard rumors of aeroplanes be
ing sold for 200 and 300 marks, but have
not been able to verify any instance. |
) Absurd Reductions,
Commandeered wines, bed linen, sllks,
draperies, brass and copper work, which
were taken from the Belgians under or
der from the kommandantur of this and
that eity, have been sold back to the
clvillan populatfon at absurd reductions.
In the Parc &' Avroy day before vester
day 1 saw a German soldier standing by
A handcart filled with rare old Burgun
dles, champagne, cognac and Benedic
tine, vending his preclous wares at ex
temporized auction. His customers were
