Times Have Changed Since the Day of Ben Franklin!
A Little Story About Twentieth Century Versus Eighteenth Century Methods in Optical Science
AY, January 17th, 1919, was the 213th anniversary of Ben Frank
lin's birth. This eminent American was indeed one of our greatest
benefactors. 4
Borm i Boston, Mass., on Januvary 17th, 1706, Ben Franklin, while still
a young man, became distinguished as an author, statesman and scientist. In
science, his electrical discoveries, with the invention of the lightning-rod, are
very important and besides these, many other discoveries and inventions are
to be accredited to him.
He is best remembered for his accomplishments in other fields of en
deavor than that of Optical Science, but the fact is that Ben Franklin “fath
ered” the Bifocal ldea in eyeglasses—thus improving the vision of a far
sighted man who was near-sighted.
Two Hundred Years Ago Today
Indians were a problem.
The Kaiser wasn't.
Everybody told the truth.
Ladies wore their skirts longer.
Operations were rare.
Hooverizing wasn't known.
Nobody swatted the fly.
Nobody had appendicitis.
Nobody wore white shoes.
No one heard of “Tin Lizzies.”
Eggnog WAS eggnog.
Nobody “listened in"" on the telephone.,
Old maids were scarce.
Prohibition wasn’t good form.
Nobody had *‘astigmatism.”
Well, it's different, that's all!
THIS IS AN AGE OF SPECIALISTS

OPTOMETRY, as now defined by statutory
law in over thirty States, is “The employ
ment of any means, other than the use of
drugs, for the measurement of the powers
of human vision and the adaptation of lenses
for the aid thereof.”
AN OPTOMETRIST is a practitioner of Op
tometry, and is, literally, an eye-measurer,
but he is also skilled in Mechanical Optics,
which enables him to supervise the construe
tion of RIGHT glasses when needed. In his
examination of defective or strained eyes,
~ be first takes note of any unhealthy eondi
tion, in order that he may recommend treat
ment outside of his own specialty, should
the person, for any reason, seem to require
such attention. He then satisfies himself
as to the focal state (seeing quality), using
both the ophthalmoscope and Retinascope in
a dark room, (flashlight photograph' here
with) avd other modern instruments and
methods. The Optometrist next proves his
findings with the usual test lenses and vision
charts and, finally, measures the strength of
the muscles that rotate the eyeballs. Pe
cause of these thorough examination meth.
ods, the Optometrist is the real EYE.
STRAIN SPECIALIST,. and the publie
should demand his services as outlined
above. 6
AN OPTICIAN is one who grinds, fashions
or constructs lenses out of glass or other
transparent material. ‘He is a 4 maker and
sometimes a seller of glasses
AN OCULIST is a physician who spe
cializes in eye diseases and the medical
treatment of same.

(Near Terminal Station)
s AY back in the Eighteenth Century,Ben Franklin wore Bifocal eyeglasses with &
w queer-looking, unsightly crack through their center. They were s decided ad
vance over the more ancient glasses for near or far vision only, but that con
spicuous, age-revealing ‘‘crack’” or seam was a disadvantage—which has only recently
been overcome in the Twentieth Century KRYPTOK (pronounced Crip-toek) Glasses.
The lower part of KRYPTOKS affords the necessary correetion for reading or other
close work; the upper part, for distance. Yet not the slightest trace of a dividing line
is visible. The two lenses are fused together in one solid, smooth, erystal-clear piece. It
can not be distinguished from a single-vision lens. ' That’s why KRYPTOKS are called
the “invisible bifocals.”” They keep your eyes young in looks as well as in usefulness.
About Two Hundred Years Ago
Ben Franklin realized the annoying handicap of having to carry two pairs of glasses
and continually changiug them upon oceasion for near or far vision, He *‘fathered’”
the Bifocal Idea, which rendered unnecessary the everlasting removing and replacing
of his glasses, or fussing with two pairs. But he did look “‘funny’’ with the erack in his
glasses which mar the appearance.
Today, both the old-fashioned, unsightly bifocals and the still older-fashioned fwo
pairs-of -glasses nuisance is rendered unnecessary, You are freed from their use by mod
ern KRYPTOK BIFOCALS.
Yet to this very day—so strong is custom-—many people fall into one of three classes
of behind-the-times wearers of eyeglasses. Which class are you in? Do you wear the
out-of-date bifocals with the conspicuous seam or hump? Do you have to remove (or
peer over) your reading glasses to see distant objects? Do you fuss with two pairs of
glasses—one pair for near vision, the other pair for far vision? If you do—you need
KRYPTOK Glasses.
How to Tell Whether You Need
KRYPTOK Glasses
If you can not see objects clearly through vour reading glasses; or
If you fuss with two pairs of glasses (one pair for near vision, the other for far
vision) ; or
If you wear out-of-date bifocals with the disfiguring seam or hump; then
You need KRYPTOK Glasses.
IT COSTS YOU NOTHING TO KNOW THE
ABSOLUTE TRUTH ABOUT YOUR EYES
Efficient men and women need the fullest competency in all their
faculties, of which Good Eyesight is Probably the Most Important.
Are you impairing your efficiency, cutting down your chances of
advancement, pushing away increases in earning power that should
be yours, suffering from physical pain and facing the possibility of
blindness ?
Poor eyesight, while it is a common failing, is by law of compen
sation also the most easily corrected of any of the senses’ deficien
cles. Don’t go through life with this handicap. Why let deficient
eyesight hamper you in business or social progress?
KRYPTOK Glasses solve the problem. For clear, sharp vision and
restful comfort as well as for appearance's sake, you should investi
gate KRYPTOK Glasses, I make no charge for careful, scientific
examination of your eyes if glasses are ordered. I use no drugs in
giving your eyes the most thorough examination. It you need
glasses I will be glad to supply them, and it you do not need glasses
I will frankly tell you so,
is a distinet profession, based upon
mathematical principles, and a knowl
edge of the structure and funetions of
the eye. The Optometrist, while lim
iting his practice to correcting errors
of vision which produce eyestrain,
headache, etc., with glasses, is able by
the aid of the Ophthalmoscope to de
tect diseased conditions of the eyes and
recommend the proper course to pur
sue. The Optometrist uses no dan
gerous drugs in examining the eye for
struetural defeets and is, therefore, the
safest one to consult when in need of
eye help.
The public does not realize the great ad
vance the science of Cptometry has made
during recent years. Today a patient gets
an examination of the eyes equal to any ob
tainable, including a pair of Astigmatic
glasses, for less than the wholesale price
paid for lenses thirty years ago. Not all
Optometrists are equal in proficiency any
more than you would expect all physicians
to be equal in skill. Experience and natu
ral aptitude is the criterion of maximum
proficiency Physiclans formerly pulled
teeth, but today you go to.a dentist. The
day is not far distant when the public will
go to an Optometrist for glasses exclusively,
because this is his specialty. The ability to
do one thing well is of greatest benefit to
humanity,
