HEARST'® QI™NDAY AMEL AN — A Newsnaner for People Who Think — SUNDAY, JANUARY 26, 1919,
By JUSTIN McGRATH,
Staff Correspondent Universal Service.
PARIS. Jan. 25.—President Wilson is
seriously considering the advisability of
reporting direct to the American people
on the work of the peace conference.
Mr. Wilson has in contemplation &«
tour of the United States immediately
after adjournment of Congress. He will
visit all sections of the United States
including the Pavific Coast.
The vresident feels he owes the coas:
a visit, as it was the vote of Callfornia
that elected him. He is undisturbed by
certain criticism in the United State.
Senate, although he feels that criticism
is unkind and unfair and not in the in
terest of America at this time. He re
gards It as designed largely for Fartl
san purposes, but would have preferred
it had certain hard things that have
been said been deferred until after the
Erlnclnal work of the peace conference
ad been accomvlished.
He is confident that they wlill con
clude that such shortcomings as may
justify criticism Is unavoidable in so
'xreaaat. an enterprise so hastily organ
zed,
The receotion which the people of
America will give him on the tour and
the Indication of their wishes may de
termine the President’s decislon as to
whether he will return to Paris to take
part in the final work of the peace con
ference.
| The President therefore feels that
since a partisan campaign has been
|smrtf\d on the eve of the Republican
national convention he owes it to his
party as well as to the neo;file to see
that his visit to Eurone and the accom
vlishments of his visit are not misrep
resented to the people of his own coun
try and that a speaking tour is the only
way in which he could fully inform the
American people satisfactorily as to the
purposes he sought in coming to Europe
and the extent to which those purposes
were realized,
The President will have so much to
tell the veovle of the United States that
it will thrill them with opride.

~ Ireland Leave Coalition
‘ (By International News Service.)
DUBILIN, Jan. 25.—A new political
!sensallon has been created in Ireland
by the split of the Southern Union
;1818, headed ny Lord Middleton, fiom
the North Ireland group. Ihe Neorth- |
erners favor a partition with a por- |
tion of Ulster province joining Eng
land. \
~ The Southerners apparently prefer‘
a united states of Ireland under the
Pritish JEmpire.
- The history of the troubles in the
ranks of the Irish Unionists dates
back to the Irish convention, when
Lerd Middleton approved a colonial
home rule scheme which he was aft-l
erward forced to repudiate.
The recent movement launched by
Sir Edward Carson, leader of Ulster
Unionists for a union of part of Ul
ster and England is not popular even
with all of the Unionists. The South
erners are opposing any division of
Irish soil.
