HEARST'S STUINDAY AMEP'CAN — A Newspaper for People Who Think — SUNDAY, JANUARY 26, 1919.
By JUSTIN McGRATH, !
Staff Correspondent Universal Service.'
PARIS. Jan, 25.—President Wilson is
seriously considering the advisability of
reporting direct to the American people
on the work of the peace conference.
Mr. Wilson has in eontemplation a
tour of the United States immediately
after adjournment of Congress. He will
visit all sections of the United States,
including the Pacifiq Coast.
The vresident feels he owes the coast
a visit. as It was the vote of Callfornia
that elected him. He is undisturbed by
certain criticism in the United States
Senate, although he feels that criticism
{s unkind and unfair and not In the in
terest of America at this time, He re
gards it as desl%ned largely for ‘paru
'san purposes. but would have preferred
it had certain hard things that have
been said been deferred until after the
prineipal work of the peace conference
'had been accomvlished,
~ _He is confident that they will con
clude that such shortcomings as may
justify criticism is unavoidable in so
‘ln':dat an entervrise so hastily organ
zed.
The reception which the people of
America will give him on the tour and
the indicatlon of their wishes may de
termine the President's decision as to
whether he will return to Paris to take
| part in the final work of the peace con
ference.
The- President therefore feels that
since a partisan campaign has been
started on the eve of the Republican
national convention he owes it to his
party as well as to the people to see
that his visit to Europe and the accom
plishments of his visit are not misrep
resented to the peovle of his own coun
try and that a speaking tour is the only
way in which he could fully inform the
American peovle satisfactorily as to the
purposes he sought in coming to Europe
‘and the extent to which those purposes
were realized.
| The pPresident will have so much to
‘tell the veovle of the United States that
‘n <will -thrill them with pride.

Southern Unionists in
‘ Ireland Leave Coalition
(By International News Service.)
DUBLIN, Jan. 25.—A new political
sensation has been created in Ireland’
by the split of the Southern Union
ists, headed by ILord Middleton, from
the North Ireland group. The North<
erners favor a partition with a por
tion of Ulster province joining Eng
land.
The Southerners apparently prefer
a united states of Ireland undér® the
British Fmpire, |
The history nf the troubles in the
ranks of the Irish Unionists dates
back to the Irish convention, when
Lerd Middleton approved a~tolonial
home rule scheme which he was aft
erward forced to repudiate. :
The recent movement launched by
Sir Edward Carson, leader of Ulster
Unionists for @ union of part of Ul
ster and England is not popular even
with all of the Unionists. The South
erners are oppesing any division of
Irish soil. ' & |
