The probe, which be?n slx days
ago, probably will close Friday after
noon. Mr. Chambers has only a few
more withesses to call, among them
Chief Cody, and the fire board has in
dicated its intention to call only W. B.
Cummings, former chief, whose name
has been prominent in the probe.
Mr. Chanbers called a long lst of
witnesses Thursday afternoon, but
they were handled with @ispatch, a

Virtually every officer in the de

to their absolute confidence in the
chief. They also denied ever having
known hém to curse or abuse his men.
J. P. Allen, proprietor of the J. B
Allen Company, and Chris Eesig, for
merly in the clothing business on
Whitehall street, both of whom saf
fored heavy fire losses during Chief
Cody's administration, warmly
praised the chief for his work in con

Before the close of the session Mr.
Chambers mntroduced Captain J. L

name has been connectod with pro-

remarks at the fire house which near

said that on one occasion Straub de

blow every damned ship out of the

but for the threatening attitude of
the men, the captain testified.
On the stand Wednesday Straud

Members of the Advertising Club

movement which President 8. C.

Unlted States. It is the support of
a bill in the national Congress to

The movement was begun by J.

set aside for this work, to be dis
tributed among the States in pro
portion to their population, provided
each State meets the Federal appro

Under this bill, Georgia would be
allowed by the Federal Government
for commercial teaching a total of
$73,789 each year this to be doubled
by the State’y providing an equal
amount,
Prof. Watters pointed out at the

““Had the League been in existence in 1914, Europe would have escaped the
bloodiest of all wars,”’ declares the Birmingham Age-Herald. While the maijority of the
newspapers of America regard the experiment of a l.eague of Nations as tremendously
worth trying, some are as dubious as the New York Sun, which says: ““If the present project
means the elimination of the Monroe Doctrine; if it means the restriction of our inde~

free people and a free nation; if it means that the United States shall carry the load and
pay in large measure the bills of maintaining peace in all the little countries of Europe
and throughout the world-—the little tribal nations and the big nations as well; if it means
the hampering of this nation in its economic relations to and with the other nations of the
world, is it good enough for this free people, this free nation—is it the thing we want?™
