WASHINGTON, March 17— Ma-
Jor General Peter B. Traub, who
commanded the PForty-first Di
vision, tells this story on himself: |
One evening, after an unusually
qulet day in his sector, the general
was aroused by the ringing of the |
- phone at his elbow. He pulled |
down the receiver and asked:
“What is it?
“You are Brigadier Ceneral Pe
ter B. Traubd, commanding the

“Yes. What is 1t i
“Yon are now in your ', ¢ (post ‘

“Yeu" ‘
“You have 0 many men in soch
and such advanced post?”
‘Yes. But what is it?
“l have just captured your out
post. lam Herr Lieutenant
anpd you can go to hell”
The connection was broken and
General Traub sprang from his im
provised bed giving delineation of
character studies in which the
whole gamut of emotions was run,
the most effective, however, being
those in which rage and disgust
were portrayed by unprintable
language.
It was afterward learned that
the German leutenant had this in
formation before the raid was ac
complished, and, having an excel
lont command of the English lan
guage, declded to pay his complie
ments to the general and give him
some idea of the excelience of the
German intelligence system.

VALDOSTA, GGA., March 16.—The
County Commissioners of Lowndes
County at their meeting on the first
Tuesday in April will call an election
for a half-million-dollar good madn‘
bond issue in this county. There is
apparently an overwhelming x»ublit-i
sentiment in favor of the bonds, and
this sentiment is expected to grow as
the campaign progresses. The elec
tion will be called for the latter part
of June
Al a called meeting of the com~
migsioners held on Saturday formal
application was made for $500,000 of
the Federal good roads funds, and
the county will be ready by the lima‘
thie money s available to match it
dollar for dollar with county bonds. ‘
The application for the Governs!
ment funds now is in the hands of
State ighway Engineer W. R. Neel
If the county votes for bonds, as there
is every reason to believe will be
done, $1,000,000 will be put into paved
roadsi n Lowndes County as fast as
the work can be done. ;
It is proposed to ersate a bhond
commission to handle the funds, and
the bonds will be sold only as needed,
or as fast as the work progresses,
The 300 miles of graded roads already
in existence will materially reduce
the cost of the paved roads, as there
will b every little gerading (o do. A
large number of the county's pfomi
nent taxpayers attended the called
meeting of the County Commission
ers and pledged their co-operation in
the good roads campaign
Another bond proposition that is
growing by leaps and bounds is that
for & bond issue to build a public
hospital in this eity The Lowndes
County Medical Society has just
passed strong resolutions indorsing
the movement, and many of the city's
heaviest taxpayers and most promj
nent cltizens oxpress themsalves in
favor of it. It ix believed that $75.000
will build and equip an institution
large enough to meet the needs of
this city and section, and this prob
ibly will be the amount of the hond
issue if carvied. At present there is
only one hospital in Valdosta, a pri-|
vate ingtitution that has more busi- |
ness than it can accommodate ‘
