Southern region had fought bitterly,

VALDOSTA, GA., March 16.-—The
County Commissioners of Lowndes
County at their meeting on the first
Tuesday in April will call an election
for a half-mfllion-dollar good roads
bond issue in this county. There is
apparently am overwhelming public
sentiment in favor of the bands, and
this sentiment is expected to grow as
the eampaign progresses. The elec
tion will be calied for the latter part
of June. \
At a called meeting of the rom-‘
missioners held on Saturday formal
application was made for $5600,000 of
the Federal good roads funds, and
the ecounty will be ready by the time
this money is available to match it
gollar for dollar with county bonds.
The application for the Govern
ment funds now is in the hands of
State Highway Bngireer W. R. Neel
i the county votes for bonds, as there
s every reason to believe will be
done, 1,000,000 will be put into paved
roads in Lowndes County as fast as
the work can be done. )
i
It is proposed to create a bond
commission to handle the funds, and
the bonds will be sold only as needed,
or as fast as the work progresses.
The 300 miles of graded ronds already
in existence will materially reduce
the cost of the paved roads, as there
will be very little grading to do. A
large number of the county's promi
nent taxpayers attended the called
mepting of the County Commission
ors and pledged their co-operation in
the good roads campaign. |
Another bond proposition that is.
growing by leaps and bounds is that
for a bond issue to butid a public
hospital in this ecity. The Lowndes
County Medical Soclety has Just
passed strong resolutions indorsing
the movement, and many of the city's
heaviest taxpavers and most promy
nent citizens express themselves ln!
favor of it. It is believed that $75.000
will build and equip an institution
large enough to meet the needs of
this city and section, and this prob
ably will be the amount of the bond
issue If carried. At present there is
only one hospital in Valdosta, a pri
vate institution that has more busi
ness than it can gecommodate,
