DEAD CRICKS
OFTEN FOUND
IN THE SHELL
Importance of Freshness, Clean
' .
liness, Turning and
Temperature,
By B. Armstrong Roberts.
Discard all eggs which are unusually
long, too round, flattened on one side,
elliptical, wedge-shaped and those which
have a pronounced excrescence or ridge
in the shell. Such eggs might be termed
monstrosities and can not be expected
to hatch succesgfully.
The shell of an egg is entirely inde
pendent of the embryo. The egg with a
malformed shell may possess a strong
g‘erm capable of normal develb;;ment,
ut if the shell is seriously malformed
the chick will be unable to break its
way through at hatching time. That is
the reason for selecting eggs with such
care,
There is a commonplace that round
eggs will hatch pullets and long eggs
cockerels, This is a notion and should
not be taken seriously. The shape of an
egg is influenced entirely by the con-}
tour of the oviduect, the organ in which
the yolk receives the albumen and later
the shell, and has nothing whatever to
do with the sex of its embryo. Eggs
are cast, so to speak, by the mould and
contour of the oviduct. For Yroof of
this, we observe that the hen laying a
long egg or a round efig. will continue
to lay the form peculiar to her with
very little variation, providing she is
not frightened or injured in any way. ‘
The shell of an egg is exceedingly!
porous, which enables the embryo to
take in oxyqen through the ghell, other
wise it could not breathe. During the
early stages of incubation a network of
blood vessels surround the inner mem
;rane of the egg, close to the shell
hese blood vessels absorb the oxvgen
and act as the respiratory apparatus
for the embryo until about the nine
teenth day of incubation, when the lungs
are completed and brought into use.
Obviously, anything which tends to
close up the pores in the egg shell alse
tends to suffocate the embrvo and de
stroy it. Therefore badly soiled eggs
should not be used for hatching pur
poses. To wash the eggs is likely to
make matters worse, inasmuch as the
washing process usually forces the par
ticles of dirt deeper into the pores.
Moreover, on the shell of the fresh egg
there is a mucilaginous coating which
is inteded to protect the porous texture
of the shell, and to prevent undue evap
‘oration of the contents of the egg.
Washing destroys this coating, which is
harmful.
Sitting hens sometimes break an egg
or two, which damage is apt to mess
things up for the rest of the eggs.
Rather than allow the hatch to go on
with some of the eggs thickly coated
with the contents of the broken eggs,
it is best to make some effort to clean
them. Scrape the soiled eggs with a
knife blade; this will remove the bulk
of the damage; then if desired the shells
can be wiped with a cloth,
Dead Chicks in “he Shell.
One of the most distressing conditions
in connection with hatching, artificial or
natural, is the number of chicks that
bhave developed perfectly, apparently,
until the Jast day, when they are then
found dead in the shell. Very often the
majority of these chicks go so far as
to pip the shell.
A number of things can account for
such losses. Strange as It may seem, the
size of an egg has little to do with the
size of the <hick, all other conditions
being equal. The size of the chick at

Aerial Flivvers, Not
.
Counting Falls, Soon
To Become the Rage
By DELT EDWANDS,
Staff Correspondent of the |. N{ S.
LONDON (by mail).—Shove your
old auto into the barn and buy a
nice cheap airplane if you want to
see what real adventure is.
With thousands of able aviators
turned loose from the battlefield we
are now getting the “low-down" on
flying. Some of them tell you it is
great to fall out of the clouds;
g}hers that it does not hurt you a
t to drop fifteen or sixteen thou
and feet, if you know how —and it
only does about $250 damage to the
airplane.
Here is what one genial aviator
figures an airplane “ought to cost:"
Airplane, two-seater, $1,600;
housing, per year, $600; mechanic
and boy, per year, $1,200; overhaul
ing, per year, $150; fuel and 011, per
mile, 3 cents; each fall (if coffin is
not required), $250,
According to this comforting
young man, some company should l
come along and turn out a breed of
aerial flivvers at a cost of §1,600
down——very much down. This
type would be a biplane-~that is, it
would carry two persons—would be
able to climb 17,000 or 18,000 feet |
and attain a speed of 40 to 90 miles
an hour, Of course, if you want to ‘
fall more than 18,000 feet, you must
pay for the extra power so required
to get you up so high. Lofl:x carry~ |
ing airplancs will be much more ex- |
pensive,
“But repairs will cost very little,”
the cheerful aviator assures you.
“Even when you take a,bad fall,
where it looks as if the machine
were totally smashed up, the repairs
only run up around $250."
Of course, this amount does not
include a cotfin or any burial ex
penses, if the first fall goes all
wrong.
If @« man becomes a fairly good
flyer and escapes falling all the
time, his airplane should last him
two or possibly three years and re
qgiire probably only one overkaul
im; at a cost of about $l5O,

hatching time is largely dependent upon
the degree of. evaporation which has
taken place during the first two weeks.
And the degree of evaporation depends
chiefly upon the amount of moisture that
is present, either in the egg chamber
of an incubator or in the nest of the
sitting hen.
‘Where a grent deal of molsture is
maintained the embryo will be large. In
fact, if the molsture is excesssive, the
embryo is likely to be so large that at
hatching time it oompletelfl fills the
egg, in which event the chick has great
difficulty in turning around inside the
shell in order to J)lp an opening.
It will be noted that the chicks pips
the shell in a circle, a task that requires
considerable effort, after which it rests.
Then, making a supreme effort, the
chick attempts to staighten out its body,
and thus spreads the two divisions of
the shell and is liberated.
If the chick can not turn around in
side the egf by reason of its size, or ex
hausts itself in so trying, even though
it pips a hole, it dies shortly, and thus

contribiites toward that great mortality
known as ‘‘dead In the shell.”
On the other hand, the embryo of
diminutive size is equal’llg handimu-{ml,
only in a different way. The small chick
can turn round eauilf/, but when it kicks
out to pip the shell, it finds its blows
too short, therefore, too weak to be of
fective. It struggles, and would suc
ceed in the end, as many do, but as a
rule the effort is too exhausting, hence
a}l]mltlher addition to the ‘“dead in the
shell.”
From this discussion it can be under
stood why the long egg or the round
eggs is unsuitable for hatching. The
former would contract the chick and
make turning difficult or lmßnuible; the
latter would give the chick too much
space for its blows to become effective
It sometimes happens that the air cell
develops in the small end of the egg or
on one side, instead of in the large end,
and in most cases of this sort the chick
fails to extricate itself,
