men whose deaths were due to enemy
action; fbr sisters and nurses, killed
or died of wounds or disease; for
labor units of all races, and, indeed,
for all who hayve served in any cas
pacity in the war. The distinctive
badges of these headstones are not
yet decided upon,
In addition to the name and rank
upon the headstone, we feel that rel
‘ntlvu should, if they wish, add a
‘-hort inscription of thelr own cholce
as an expression of personal fecling
and affection. Those Inscriptions
‘will be at the relatives’ expense, and,
to avold unduly crowding the stones
with very small lettering, which, bes
sldes being difficult to read, does not
weather well, it has been found neec
essary to restrict the length of the
Ainscription to 65 letters,
Every cemetery will keep regis
ters of the dead buried there, and in
these registers it is hoped that it
will be possible, with the assistance
of his kin. to enter the age, parent
age and birthplace of each known
man,
The planning and planting of the
cemeteries must depend largeiy on
their site and the climate of the coun
try, but it is proposed that, as a gen
eral rulethe oamem’u should have
buildings designed for services, cere
monies and shelter, where the regis
ter of that cemtery will be kept un
der safeguard.
To recapitulate:

A Mohammedan mosque and Hindu

After #o many years of fighting
over densely populated and efvilized
countries like France and Belgium,
it is inevitable that there must be
single graves and groups in powsitions
where, when the life of the land goes
forwurd again, they can not be
reached dr tended, \ ‘
Some lle In what were once town
or village thoroughfares, and will be
#0 again, others by the side of rail
way stations and goods yards, houses
or factories, In arable or pasture
fields, parks, gardens, and the like. .
The objections to leaving These
graves where they are need not be
dwelt upon: No precantions will save
them from being encroached upon or
obliterated in the course of ,time, |
There {s, moreover, a strong senti-|
ment among all ranks throughout the
British Empire (hu& such scattered

iof them. -
It has been suggested that the en.
t®ance to individual cemeteries
ghould carry a text or inscription,
and it has been declded that monu
ments should be crected to the dead
whose graves are unknown, of a ure
| cial form which has yet to be settled,
l Progress of the Work. .
{ Meantime the long and difficult
|hufimvus of identification and regis
tration goes forward, still on al
fronts. The various architects, to
whose charge the cemeteries have
been allotted, are preparing their de«
slgns for the planting and the bijld
ings required in France, and steps are
bheing taken to prepare dignified and
characteristic Bcsigns for our ceme-
I'teries in the Fast and elsewhere,
All this ean be effected In reason
able time, but there is no possibility
of expediting the dellvery. of the
headstones, .
More than half a million of these
will be required, and at present there
i not labor enough lin all the world
to cut, car{a and letter them. While
they are being made the wooden
crosges will stand.
