HREARST'S SUNDAY AMERICAN — A Newspaver for People Who Think — SUNDAY, MAY 1919,
A great deal of interest was mani
festad during the past week concern.
ing automobile tires and tubes and
the 16 per cent reduction which was
made by the leading tire manufac
turers of the country.
At Elyea Company's, which is the
home of the now famous Kleco auto
mobile tubesy information was ob
tained that prices would continue to
be in the same proportion to other
prices, as heretofore. Elco tubes are
made strictly according to the speci
fications of Elyea Company, and mar
keted solely by this concern. Con
tracts are let for many months' sup
ply in advance, and these contracts
are always made in sudh a manner
that they are able to protect their
customers at all times, and continue
to market their Elco tubes at an ap
proximate savihg of 15 per cent from
the so-called standard brand tubes,
and also to give their dealers the
benefit of the very hest tube obtain
able,
Kleo tubes have grown in populari
ty in the past four years at a tre
mendous rate. They are now consid
ered to be one of the most desirable
lines of automobile tubes for an auto
mobile supply dealer to handle that
is obtainabld. Dealers who are hand
ling this tube know that Elyea Com
pany.stands behind every single one
of them, guarantees them unguali
fiedly, and when a bad tube does show
up once in a while they not only re
place it free of charge, but pay trans
portation back to Atlanta on the de
fective tube. This is a stronger guar
antee than can be obtained from any
regular tire concern doing business
within this territory.
Elyea Company now has on hand a‘
fairly good supply of these tubes, but
has In transit two very large shlp“
ments of good, fresh stock, which will
be sold to the dealers at the new
prices. This new price list, by lhe}
way, will be sent out within a very
short time, but in the meantime all
orders from now which reach them
will be filled at the new prices re
gardless of the printed price list which |
the dealers now hold. j
The automotive equipment df-part-!
ment of Elyea Company continues to
show unusual activity and the man
agement of this department says their
sales will greatly exceed during the
present month the sales which they
enjoyed during May of 1918, This
only emphasizes the importance of
dealers getting their stocks in readi
ness for the spring and summer
business, which is now practically on
them. There is bound to be the
largest supply business this summer
that has ever been known within the
Southern States, and the wise, the
good business man, will very readily
appreciate the advantage of getting
hig stoek in order before the business
is actually on him.
A. N. Houston, the Elco Esquire,
spent Monday in Atlanta, going
through the stock of Elyea Company
and generally getting himself in tip
top shape to take care of his trade,
A. E. Spears, known as “Billy” to
the trade, also spent last Monday in
the oflice.
W. W. Stanley, who travels Eastern
North Carolina, with headquarters in
Greensboro, was a visitor to Elyea
Company's office during Monday of
the past week. He has not been in
since the early part of February, and
he spent a great deal of his time in
the stock room, getting what he

W. C. Barnwell, of the Ragan-Ma
lone Company, who returned from
New York last week, gave the Firing‘
Line editor a most illuminating im- |
pression of the present condition of
the merchandise market, A number
of.conditions, some of which originat.
ed abroad, contribute to the tension
in thé present market. Not only is
merchandise scarce and high-priced,
but Indications are that it is about to
launch a lofty flight which will be
sustained indefinitely, |
The reconstruction of l‘]urnpean‘
countries which have suffered from
the effects of the recent world war
are buying cotton and cotton plw]fl
vets in immense quantities. This |
naturally has a tendency to developa
shortage here, as supply has not been
able to keep pace with demand. ‘
The biggest mills in the country!
are behind on orders because mer
chants and jobbers have both hesi
tated about buying. The result is
that every buyer wants his nrdors!
filled and delivered immediately, One |
can readily visualize the chaotic con
ditions that have grown out of this|
state of affairs, as it is impossible for
mill owners to agree to meet these
demands. Merchants everywhere
should awaken to the true svrimm-!
ness of things amngl shouldn’t dilly
dally about nrde'rlrr‘: what they need‘
and ordering at once, ‘
The road salesmen of the Ragan-
Malone Company are out on the firing
line with their fall samples and it is
evident that merchants are rapidly
growing to understand the need of
buying, as orders are coming in in
great quantities. All of the men are
scoring in fine style.
