Whitehall street, with its wonderful retail dis

of Mr. Smith. He believed this shopping district
~ eould be made here. He also has been instrumental
in building much of the other central property. He
is recognized as one of the most progressive busi
ness men of the citv. Many of Atlanta’s largest
buildings came into heine throngh negotiations car

Mr. Smith is widely known in progressive poli
tics. He managed the campaign of Joe Brown for
Governor and later for United States Senator. He
later managed the campaign of Hugh M. Dorsey
for Giovernor.

While Mr. Smith was operating alone, he han

avenue to Munrphy avenue, involving more than
€1.000,000., This section is one of the largest in

Fourteen vears as city tax assessor and proba
bly better acquainted with real estate values than
any other man in the city is the record of Mr. Ew

vears later he entered a partnership with Edwin
P. Ansley. This firm built the Ansley Hotel and
the Forsyth Building and was responsible for the
development of Forsyth street and Ansley Park.
Mr. Ewing frequently is ealled upon to fix prop
erty values in Atlanta, in Georgia and outside the
State. He is serving his third year as Alderman
and has refused nomination for a third term, de
spite the promise of no opposition.
Smith & Fwing have handled many of the
largest real estate deals in this city, including sub

syth Building, location for Atlanta Warehouse
Company (Candler’s $1,000,000 project) in West
End; handled the location for Souther Field at
Americus, Ga., as a patriotie service, and did not
accept pay. Sold the Rialto Theater. The busi

deal being handled in New York involving the sale
of an office building in Twentyv-seventh street with
a sale price in excess of §750,000.
The first location of the firm was in the James
- Building, on Peachtree opposite the Candler Build
