DEVOTED TO THE INTERESTS OF THE MEN
* Judging by the number of capes
s eon all over the place thi winter
‘ohe would judge that the vogue for
Fthils garment must have pretly near
1y ;un its®if out. But apparently it
shows no signs of tiring It is ac-
Ltually taking on new life, disporting
Liself, as it were in new fabrics
‘with new variations
Having consumed much of the
mvailable supply of blue serge, il I 8
now turning to other fabries and col
ors, subdued plaids being among the
Jutest to appear. This contir ned vogue
of the cape is held to be responsible to
scome extent for the shortage of me
d.oum weight worsted goods
Such a shortage is especiallw no
ticeable in. fine staples like French
sorges, plaids and checks But it is
Yenorted in practically all kinds of
worsted and woolen dres: goods, Sell
ying agents are said to be reducing the
orders already on their books by 30
to 40 percent, and the cutting up
' trade professes to be worrying about
gotting enough goods to supply the
consumer demand i
This doesn't sound like something
the cutting up trade has reason 10 |
worry about, but it does sound |lke§
something the consumer has reason
#oo worry about Because it means
higher prices. And one doesn’t need
to believe everything one hears lul
realize that higher prices on the finer l
woolen goods next fall are a distinct |
possibility Advancing prices in the |
raw wool market, belated production |
and an increasing demand all point
dn the same direction.
What is one man’s meat, however,
4= another man’'s poison, and the situ
;minn is likely to redound to the espe
wial benefit of certain fabrics. Knitted |
f.‘brl;i:. for instance. These can Im“
turn out about three times as fast |
2+ woven fabrics and can catch up
Mhwith the demand just that much |
faster, So that they are in a partic
ularly advantageous position just at
,ju‘esem when other goods are handi
wipped by a late start, |
The advantage enjoyed by knitted
fabrics in this respeet would, of
course, he of little value if they did
‘mot enjoy a corresponding demand
“But as it happens they are among
the most wanted dress goods for fall
gnd every indication points to the
Wct that their vogue is increasing.
YES MAMAND THEY RE THE VERY BEST-100

one has very aptly said that “the first
requisite of success is not_to gain a
\(lnllur, but to confer a benefit.” The
|word benefit is only another defini
tion of service, And service from an
[nummnhilv suppiy dealer’'s standpoint
begins by having a comprehensive
‘stock of merchandise on hand. Au
tomobile tubes constitute one of the
most important items of the dealer.
Every dealer, therefore, should see
that his stoek of FElco tubes is in
tiptop shape by the first of June at
the latest.

Brisk Demand for White
. . .
Goods With Allied Lines
Showing Signs of Moving
BRISK DEMAND FOR WHITE goods
White goods are moving very freely
at present, according to jobbers’ re
ports, and a strong sheer season is de
veloping, with organdies in wide widths
predominating. Muslins and lawns are
also quite active and have been a no
ticeable feature of the demand in the
primary markets during the past few
weeks.
. There is a good call for embroidered
‘goods, and skirtings, which have nat
‘uraily been slow for some time, are now
beginning to move with a will. Cotton
damasks are increasingly firm and the
demand for them is said now to be con
| siderably ahead of the supply.
‘ As far as movement is concerned, the
position of the white goods market is
eminently satisfactory. It is not so sat
isfactory as regards supplies. The spin
ning mills are still handicapped by
scarcity of long staple cotton and unsat
isfactory labor conditions, and goods
lan» consequently scarcer than they
ought to be,

that these trying details have been put

any indication of trade conditions out
in the field, there will be some busi

finally get started, Business for the
past week has been coming splendidly.

Ldrge Orders Show Trade
Knows Goods Are Scarce
The Dougherty-Little-Redwine Com
pany's travelers got off with “pep” last
week. Besides ‘‘pep’’ they were carrying
their fall lines, which each man asserts
are the best he has ever handled. With
such splendid samples, so much deter
mination to win accompany them, it is
reasonable to forecast great business.
Mr. J. R. Little says that it is quite
evidént from the large orders being
placed that mcl'('hanv everywhere have
begun to realize that merchandise is
gearce, and that it is safe to get under
cover, as pwices will rise.
The men have been 1n and out of the
house a great deal during the week
with customers who were anxious to
bhuy for immediate delivery. This is an
other thing which shows that merchants
have begun to protect themselves.
