Oh, About the Weather—
WHAT did 1 tell you about the
weather for these summer
openings? [ do not claim to be a
weather prophet, but I know what
generally happens when one €X
pects good weather.
For the Driving Club opening the
: weather man was just as disagree
%
able as he could well be.
Firstly, on the day before, when
every one was deciding whether or
not to go; or, if that was settled,
A ®what kind of a frock to wear, the
clouds came up and the rain de
scended—just to confound the per
filexed perspectives.
' Secondly, the downpour continued
through the early morning hours
of the fateful day. and gloomy pros
pects caused many happy plans to
be given up before ‘breakfast.
Thirdly, after these plans had
been upset, the sun came out with
a smiling, unabas‘h_e;d face—and
everybody changed their minds and
plans again!
Fourthly, it did stop raining, but
got so cold finally that everybody
. }%d to wear their winter coats over
their new Georgeite dresses, and
that almost ruined the dress, of
course. /
The Dorothy Perkins roses
bloomed right through the eve
aing, which was just as *well, the
opening date having been set for
the time of the Dorothy Perkins
roses, which are supposed to know
what they're about and to wait for
summer weather before opening up
for business.
Hereafter, it has been decided in
walemn conclave. the Dorothy P.
rages will not be ¢ ynsulted -about
1 club opening. which is to be
'ISt to the discretion of the man
egement—and the weather man.
Svmmer Frocks Sub-Rosa—
T HE women ;Nl wore their chif
fony things, just the same,
at the Driving Club opening,
though they could not patronize
the terrace, except in strolling
couples, now and then, who pre
ferred a cold solitude warmed by
their own feelings to a crowd of
folks cozily ensconced indoors.
Beneath the winter coats were
wondrous summer , costumes of
hyacinth-blue Georgette belted with
orchid and silver-tinted ribbon,
and worn with a hat of Leghorn
trimmed in a fluffy plume in which
nestled tiny French roses. Pink
and blue and white and orchid and
lavendar and flesh were the colors’
which varied this description—the
rest was the same for each woman,
except for those whe wore lace
Em\'n.s—~and they wele in consid
erable numbers, too.
. BB OY
The Choice of Paris—
T“'() of the most effective of
these summer toilette effects
were worn by sisters, and inasmuch
as one of them has recently re
turned from France, [ suspect I
could tell you where the two frocks

ATLANTA, GA., SUNDAY, MAY 25, 1919,

~lnteresting Social IFigures
) M ISS BEVA FUTCH, of Gainesville, Ga., on the left has been
) entertained extensively as the guest of Mrs. Hal Hart.
On the right is Miss Elizabeth Buchanan, a popular member of
' the school girl set. Miss Buchanan is the daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Claude Buchanan, and a granddaughter of Mrs. Lena Swift
Huntley. In the eenter is Mrs. Howard Hall, formerly of Rich
' mond, Va. Mr. and Mrs. Hall have recently moved to Atlanta
{ and have a home on East Fourteenth street.
came from, if yvou didn't know
without my telling vou. [ should
say, if you saw them, vou'd not
need to be told, for Paris speaks in
every fold and ruffie. Mrs. Frank
Adair's frock was of FKrench-blue
chiffon with tiny ruffles which run
from the bottom of the skirt up and
around the skirt—if you know what
1 mean. It was the way those ruf
fles ran which teld the story. Her
hat was of transparent straw lace,
lavendar on top and rose under
neath, the two colors showing to
gether in their transparency. A
plume of the same blue as the gown
was wreathed around the front of
the hat, and crossing this plume
was a line of tiny roses—the entire
elfect being “just too sweet for
anything.”
The costume brought over the
water for Sister Leone was of
cream lace as to corsage and pale
vellow taffeta as to sKirt. The
skirt was fashioned in some won
derful way, with insets of Val lace
edged with the narrowest and finest
of Val {ace ruffes, and her hat was
light blue, with blue plumes and
pastel rose. .garpiiure i
These two lovely costumes were
much 3ndn?£gfed by dhose who. wore
almost as beautiful vnes, of Geor
gette and chiffon and lace and the
lilke——all under their winter coats!

On With the Jazz—
THE crowds all follow the jazz
band nowadays. A recently
imported Jazz band is com-~
posed of a regular pied-piper as
semblage of musicians and wher
ever the hand goes, there goes the
crowd. Saturday night a week ago,
all the old Driving Club set depart
ed for parts unknown because the
jnzz band went—aund no one ever
would have thought the D. club
crowd would have deserted their
old stamping ground for anything.
Well, they wouldn't—except for
a jazz band.
KEven the old time orchestras are
introducing some pep into their
stately measures of late—they have
to. Visitors down this way an
nounce that, if in New York, half
o* our dancers would meet the
bouncer under uncomfortable cir
cumstances. But there are no:
houncers here—at the social clubs.
A well-known daneing expert tells
me that the Atlanta dancers have a
movement all their.own. It isn't
quite as bad as the condemned ‘ons
