Solicitor Boykin prepared Saturday
to at once hold a conference with
members of the Grand Jury and with
Police Chief Beavers and®Detective
Chief Poole relative to definite plamsl
for putting under way immediately a
big joint crusade against Atlanta au
tomobile speeders.
The Solicitor announced Friday that
he would bring to the attention of
the Grand Jury the matter of the
fatal accident Thursday afternoon,
when one man lost his life and three
others were seriously hurt in the
racing of two taxicabs at Forrest ave
nue and the Boulevard, but he stated
Saturday that the investigation would
be enlarged to embrace all speeding
in the city, with the view of vigor
ously punishing offenders and bring
ing the practice to an end. It is to
carry out this purpose that he will
confer with grand jurors and heads of
the police and detective departments.
on plans for concerted action and
drastic measures.
To Enforce Law. ‘
Judge Humphries, it was understood,
has placed himself squarely back of
the movement, and it was indicated
that the heavy hand of the law will
be brought down on reckless drivers
and speeders with erushing force.
~ In commenting on the seriousness
of the situation, Solicltor Boykin
called attention to the fact that sev
eral indictments for manslaughter
are now pending in the Criminal
Court, resulting from a series of fatal
accidents in the past several weeks.
One driver was convicted a few days
ago and Judge Humphries gave him
the limit—three years in the peni
tentiary. |
Many Lives Jeopardized.
“The lives of thousands of men,
women and children are imperilled
daily in the streets of Atlan#a by ir
responsible and reckless automobile
drivers, and the time has come to
round them up and let them feel the
Lhand of the law,” declared the Solici
tor.
“And, so far as this court is con
cerned, every case brought here will
be prosecuted vigorously.”
Several Atlanta streets have been
converted into speedways, the Solici
tor said, among these being the Bou
levard and West Peachtree street.
“Speeding has reached such a stage
in West Peachtree that it is not safe
for a pedestrian to venture across the
street unless provided with wings,”
he remarked. 5
A formal probe into the speeding
peril was expected to be begun by the
Grand Jury at its session next week.

Property Boom in Sumter
AM%:RICL’S. May 24.—Announcement
that Sumter County will expend imme
diately a million dollars in the build
ing of a new permanent highway sys
ltem here has resulted in quickened ac
tivity in the real estate market, and
prospectors are coming here almost
daily searching for desirable tracts. One
of the most important deals put through
recently was that closed yesterday when
L. ID. Wise, of Plains, sold to Walter
Kennedy a fine tract of 400 acres for
$22,000, or $55 an acre. The farm is
locates about a miile from Plains, in one
of Sumter County's most prosperous
coprmunities, and is in a high state of
cultivation.

Judge Humphries, in the eriminal
division of Superior Court, Saturday
signed an order staying the execution
on June 6 of W. C. Adamson, the me
chanical instructor recently convicted
on charges of several young girls and
sentenced to hang.
This action was taken when a mo
tion for a new trial for the condemned
man, which was scheduled for hear
ing Saturddy, was continued until
June 7. The continuance was granted
en motion of counsel for Adamßon,
who explained to the court that, on
account of the time required to com
plete the voluminous record in the
case, they were unprepared to proceed
with the hearing at this time. ?
Should the courts finally find
against Adamson, a new execution
date would have to be named.
Mrs. Adamson, who went insane in
the courtroom when h®r husband was
found guilty and given the death pen
alty, was reported to have practically
recovered her normal condition,

HOROSCOPE. iy
Monday, May 26, 1919,
This is an uncertain day in planetary die
rection, according to astrology. Jupiter,
Uranus "and the Sun are all in evil place.
There may be some sort of uncertainty
in regard to commercial problems, owing -
to the malefic influence of l;—anua, the
planet that is supposed to cau misjudg
ment and fear, when in sinister aspect,
Warning is given against subtle prop
aganda affecting certain lines of trade and
even financial interests.
Physicians and surgeons may be affect~
ed by this same baleful sway of the
stars. Reports discounting their contri
butions to public servicée may be circu
lated and hospitals mayafihe investigated.
A period of widespread accusation, and
reformation of established institutions is
at hand, and seers declare and many will
suffer from unjust imputation, while oth
ers are deserving of censure.
This is a most unfavorable directioh for
those who seek aid from Government of
ficials or from financiers, since Uranus en
courages distrust. -
There is a sign read as presaging Gov
ernment appointments that will .cause se- )
vere criticism. Changes in cerfain I'ed-’
eral offices are forecast in the summer.
Saturn today gives promise of temporary
heed to the admonition of aged statesmen
and other persons long accustomed to
authority, but their day of power is past
and _young men and women will rule in
the new era.
Since extremes of opinion will be, mani
fest for the next few months, the set
tling of public problems may be exceed
ingly slow.
IT.abor is still under a 4 planetary govern
ment making fer deliverance from many
hard randitiom{i great increase in pros
perity.
Phe seers deelare that there will not ha
an “appreciahle decrease of either wages
or cost of living for many months.
Persons whose birthdate it is should not
speculate, or risk money. The domestic
cirele should be safeguarded.
Children born on this day are likely to
be trustworthy and prosperous. These suh
jects of Gemini, however often areicare
less and extravaganpt. 4 ]
