DEVOTED TO THE INTERESTS OF THE MEN
The much-talked-of “spring drive”
. of Elyea Company gertainly showed
wonderful results during the month
of May just past. Their sales, accord
ing to the management of this widely
known wholesale automotive equip
‘ment, bigycle and bicycle sundries
and victrola house, exceeded by a
wide margin their sales of May, 1918,
In fact, May, 1919, was the second
blarg«-sl month in the history of Elyea
: Company, and lacked only a scant
SI,OOO of being the largest month in
their entire business career:
This should be very gratifying to
dealers in their lines, because it
v« Proves conclusively that business this
summer will far outstrip the business
which they have enjoyed in any pre
vious summer during the past decade.
In fact, the dealers should congratu
late themselves upon being in the
automotive equipment and bicycle
business during this good year 1919.
Increaged opportunities bring in
creased obligations. It's a fast game
nowadays to be in a retail business
of any kind, but especially the auto
motive equipment and bicyecle busi
ness requires dealers to be on tiptoz
all the time. Service, good service, is
what automobile owners require,

Increase House Force
To Handle Larger Trade
Among the most important additions
to the house force of John Silvey &
Co. is Lieutenant Bob Hudson, who re
cently returned with the Eighty-second
Disvision from France.
Mr. Hudson served his country more
than a year and a half with the Eighty
gecond and is now in civilian clothes
and back at his old experienced job,
which is the dry goods line. He has
been with a large jobber in Montgom
ery, Ala., for five or six years. He
takes the position of flo? salesman in
the dress goods, silks dnd linen de
partment under R. K. Rambo. His
many friends will be glad to know of
Pis splendid connection with this live
irm.
Another man recently taken on by
John Silvey & Co. is Mr. V. Hopkins,
of McDonough, Ga., who goes in the
packing department, which place was
made vacant by the promotion of Mr.
R(?lph Culpepper, who has been moved
to Mr. McDaniel’'s department in the
gent's furnishing line,
This firm has always been noted for
promoting its help where justified.
merchant. They -have believed all
the year that this summer’'s business
would far exceed any like period in
the history of the automotive and
bicyele industry. They have backed
up their opinion along this line by
getting together the largest stock of
merchandise they have ever had since
being in this business, and they are
in a position, accarding to the man
agement of this firm, to take care of
the largest and most exacting ac
counts anywhere within the seven|
States which they are now covering
with eleven traveling salesmen. They
golicit inquiries and correspondence
from every legitimate automotive
equipment and bicycle dealer within
their territory. They publish fre
quent catalogues in these two lines,
and they are extremely anxious that
all dealers be supplied with a copy.
Any automotive equipment or bicycle
dealer who has not received a copy
of their 1919 catalogwe is requested
to communicate with them at once,
and they will be glad to supply him
with a copy.

A sales manager of the old school
once said that salesmanship was two- |
thirds personality and one-third mer-I
chardise. May be,he was right. Who
knows? However, present-day tactics
don't indicate that he was correct in
the strictest sense. That is the ex
perience of the sales force of the J.
Regensteln Company, wholesale mii
lirery, seems to show.
These gentlemen know from per
scnal contact each day with shrewd
merchants that to be a bull's-¢ye hit
ter you have to “go get 'em.” Weath
er reports might make good reading
&t times, but the general manager
end board of directors prefer to see
the name on the dotted line, be
cause the name on dotted line spon
turns to gold, and no better or more
interesting reading was ever discov
ered than that which the United
Siates Government p'aces on its coin
ard its currency.
The gentlemen in the photograph
above have their own ideas of good
salesmanship, and their ideas can’t be
vrong. If a man or a body of men
“put it over,” you have the answer.

WHO MAKE AND SELL ATLANTA PRODUCTS
In the midst of all the controversy
between the Federal Government and
the big brewers intense interest has
been aroused by the annourfcement
made by the vintners of Virginia Dare
wine. This noted vintage of South
ern grapes is to continue on the mar
ket and will retain i®*s title of wine
The reason for this is that the long
famous beverage is now made non
intoxicating. As a result of a re
markable scientific discovery, the se
cret of Garrett & Co.; the alcohol is
extracted from Virginia Dare wine
after vintage, fermentation and ma
turing, which take place precisely as
heretofore,
Although deprived of its alcohol to
meet the new conditions, Virginia
Dare wine is in no sense a grape
juice. It remains a true wine, with,
it is stated, all its old delights of fine
flavor and rare bouquet. Yet it is
wtihin the terms of the strictest law
and the desires of those who have
long sought an agreeable wine, which
while nonintoxicating, still has what
may be called “manly character.”
Connoisseurs who have tasted the
'dealcoholized Virginia Dare wine de
clare, it is said, that the exquisite
flavor of the wine is actually im
rroved by the extraction of the alco
hol. That is exactly what was to be
expected.
Science comes to the rescue, a dif
ficulty is overcome, and the conse
quence is an instantly recognized
step of betterment, It is the wine,
the delicious beverage, not the dele
terious alecohol, that everybody wants
today
Slowly, but surely, as grind the
mills of time, the great scene shifters
of civilization bring new touches of
beauty and charm to their settings
