Engagement Dinners—Not—
,‘l" all the girls get married of
' . whom Madame Rumor speaks
encouragingly these days, we won't
have the dull summer that seems to
\ r threatening otherwise.
So far, few of the rumors have
materialized, though they serve to
mildly interest the listiess little
groups of friends who sit and fan
on the front norches out Peachtree,
and other residential sections equal-
Iy terrid.
Bvery dinner party that is given
has a prospective bride included—
it can’t be helped, for almost every
girl is a prospective bride, accord
ing to the garrulous dame who is
furpishing the data for this para
raph. ;
;,And every dinner party which in
“ludes one of these prospective
brides I 8 supposed to be an engage
ment announcement dinner until
proven not to be.
There have been several of these
talse alarms of late, but while there
is a rumor, there is hope, The only
engagement dinner of recent date
which really did materialize was
given out of the city when Miss
Mary Ela Davenport, of Americus,
was thus prociaimed the flancee of
Major Quimby Melton, of Atlanta,
The affair was a soclal event of
much interest, given at the home of
Mr. and Mrs, Frank Lanier, last
week, 3
+ Major Melton is one of the Figh
\\y-ucond Division officers being
watmly welcomed home. He won

Debutantes of Coming Winter
AM()NG the malny charming girls who will make their
formal bow to the soeial world this winter are Miss
Katherine Hook, in the ¢@nter, who has been entertaining at
a series of parties recently for her guest, Miss Emily Boyd,
shown on the left. On the right is Miss Catherine Sanders,
the row of pretty girls having been snapped as they sat
uroulld a tea table at the driving club. Standing is Miss Alice
Stearns, one of the most popular girls of the younger set, who
will make a debut this winter.
tame, too, and his bride will be
cordially welcomed to Atlanta,

‘‘Mister Officer’’—
SPEAK!NG of Major Melton, I
am reminded that the engage
ment of this yvoung officr came to
the society editor with his name
given simply as “Mr” Melton,
whereas it was promptly changed
by the “sass” editor, and major ap
plied thereto,
Perhaps the impertinent ‘“eass”
editor was wrong at that, but she
thought the title should be given, if
only “by courtesy,” for such an im
portant plece of news, -
Which brings me to the question
now puzzling mine own intelligence
(f any). What shall we cqll the
young men in their eivilian clothes,
whon: we have loiirfied tu. designate
ag lleutenant, captain and up? Are
theys still to be leutenant, captain
and up? s - i ;
They seem to prefer the old
fashioned way of calling them by
their first names, in informal dis
course, but in more formal usages
of soclety, such as wedding an
nouncements and dinner invitations,
what shall we do about it?
You know, the “vets” of the Civil
War all retained their titles and in
many eases, as the years passed,
they were promotéd from captain to
coloneland even to general. This
tendency, however, uaom‘u not to-be
popular with cur young veternns of
the great war. They tuke off their
uniforms as =oon as the tallor can
fit them out ugain and they doff
their titles with the uniform, Per
hups they are right to do it, Still
it is hard at time: for instance,
when a young leutepant like Al
" Jun Gottschaldt is made a captain in
the reserve after he dong elvilian
clothed ana never gets A chance to
be called captain a single time-—
It's hard, | tell you! <

Some Real News—
AND in the natural course of
events I had gotten so far
along with my weekly budget of
near-news when a sure-enough item
"drifted in, and, strange to say, came
right along in thisiline of talk,
For it was' an engagement, and
the name of the bridegroom-to-be
involves tne vexed question of
whether a man shall be designated
by hig title or not after he dons civ

‘The engagement is of much de
lightful social interest, for it is that
of Margaret McCarty, one of At

the official title, Lieutenant Colonel
Toulmin, formerly of the aviation
service, United States of America.
