2y GRACE THORNCLIFFE.
A street dress? You can have any
number to choose from. There is such
a great demand for street dresses at
present that our workroom can not
turn them out fast enough,
“At this time of year every one
needs a smart wool street gown, and
I am no exception,” Abercrombie re
plied.
“I'll have some models shown at‘
once,” madame said, nodding to me
+o begin “modeling.” |
“What color do you think of hav
ing, Mrs. Abercrombie?’ 'madame
¥ asked, and I could hear as I put on
my gown: “1 have several new shades
I'd like to show you.”
“New shades are all well enough,
. but for me there’'s only one street
color, and that is—"
“Navy blue,” madame chimed in.
“We said it together that time,”
Mrs. Abercrombie exclaimed. “Yes,
navy blue is the smartest and most
becoming street color I know, and I
don’t want to be lured into pastures
new.”
“Well, here you are, your favorite
vavy blue in tricotine,” madame said,
as I stepped out on the stage.
“A full tunic! Is that the approved
s: bouette?” inquired Mrs. Abercrom
bie.
“This tunic silhouette is very good
style, and one that will be becom
ing to you. The long tunic gives
length to the figure,” madame ex
pleined.
“Yes, the line is very good, because
the lower skirt narrows around the
ankles very smartly,” Mrs. Abercrom-
L bie agreed.
“You will observe this length tunic
iln many of the best fall and winter
models,” madame - answered,
“I like the lines of the tunic. Are
they cordings?” inquired Mrs. Aber
crombie,
“Not exactly cordings, but cord
tucks,” madame answered. “You see,
the tucks are so tiny that the goods
stand out like a cord. A real cord
ing is used on the waist and the
cuffs, however.”

Tulle Scarfs Take
Gay Tones Instead
.
0f Flesh or White
The cloudy tulle scarfs which
have been modish for the last three
or four winters show no signs of
diminishing favor. However, there
is this much to say: Formerly the
shoulder swathings were in flesh
color or in white; now it is the
smpx-t thing to have them of some
gay tone such as cerise, emerald
green, horizon - blue. or intense
purple, ° 4
The reason for this is not hard to
~ find. It has been a season of black
evening gowns, when white has not
been worn. Between the two the

are so original and 8o becoming,”
Mrs, Abercrombie remarked.
“Yes, the crossed straps that might
have been .inspired’ by knapsack
.
straps are very good, especially so
when they forget and stop at the vest
line, where they disappear beneath
those buttons,” madame exclaimed.
“The buttons are self-covered,
aren’t they? I always like bone but
tons with tricotine,” said Mrs. Aber
crombie. .
“Bone buttons certainly look well
with tricotine, but this gown seems
to call for self-covered buttons. They
are repeated on the sleeves, you see,”
“Yes, 1 was just observing that
cuff,” remarked Mrs. Abercrombie.
“It is very unusual.”
“Just a shaped strap cut nearly
straight,” madame explained. “There
are the cord tucks above the elbow.”
“I like those tucks,” said Mrs.
Abercrombie.
“They make a very effective trim
ming on tricotine, serge or gabardine,
especially when the angles are work
ed with embroidered arrows made of
‘black silkk, such as those used on this
gown. The vest is another good
‘touch,” madame remarked, "
“Yes, I like that finely tucked satin
very much. I must have several vests,
‘however, for a gown like this,” Mrs.
Abercrombie said.
~ “I'm making these vests of faille,
satin and duvetyne,” madame said.
‘ “Will you duplicate this model for
‘me with three vests of those mate
rials?” asked Mrs. Abercrombie.
