BUW YORK, Aug. 30.—The hounds
of the statistics, who are interested
i such things, figured it all out and
dgcided that Virginia Marie Walbel,
4 yvears old, is the youngest and the
gthallest person who ever went aloft
fn an zirplane, Sitting in the lap of
hér failier, John J, Waibel, 379 Van
Buren street, Brooklyn, Virginia made
a flight of fourteen minutes, reach
ing an altitude of 1,600 feet, in a ma
chine piloted bv Gilbert Budwig,
The plane went up from the Queens
Village Aerodrome in Hiliside avenue,
Queens, and when the ship came to
earth again the child said she had
enjoyed the trip tremendously,
“It was very thrilling,” she said,
“and 1 was greatly impressed with
the ease with which the aviator
manipulated the machine. Still, I
was greatly disappointed that he did
not lovp the loop, but 1 suppose hr“
thought it would frighten me.” ‘
“At least all the press agents had
her talking about like that,

"be the result?
From the financial and business
standpoint Italy would suffer a set
back that would prejudice her own
trade, and therefore the interests of
any other country trading with her,
for years and years to come. There
is plenty of capital in the country
waiting to develop new industries and
to exploit the natural resources of
the Boil. This capital forms the solid
est gnarantee for future prosperity
and trade expansion which will ben
efit her creditors as well as herself.
SHELL SHOCK.
The period of readjustment will be
short and not over-difficuit if the
United States looks at the problem
in a businesslike way and sets aboul
to solve it by the same methods which
an ordinary corporation would em
play in dealing with one of its debt
ors. |
‘The present position is quite clear:
Ifke every other European country of
the belligerent group, Italy is suffer
ing frofn shell shock. Her finances
need adjusting-—taxation needs en-!
foreing-—Peace must be re-established
as quickly as possible in order to re
turn to normal conditions and to get
back to work.
There is plenty of work and, what
is even more valuable at the present
day, Italy possesses the biggest asset
of any European country-—that is,
plenty of labor. ° |
The Italian workingman doés not|
need advertising. He has always
been present at roll call of the most
colossal constructions in the world,
has bent his back under every sky,
has mingled his sweat with the earth
of both hemispheres, As a laborer
he has dug, sown and reaped; as a
road maker, he has drained marshes,
filled up precipices and leveled
mountains; as a blacksmith and stone
mason, he has built palaces and cities,
roads and railways, dug out irrigation
and navigation canals; as a miner,
he has drawn its richest treasures
from the earth, has joined up seas,
divided lands, pierced and blown up
mountains; he has been the heroic
vanguard of the most spectacular en
terprises, the assailing militia in the
epic wars of man against natural
elements,
DONS OVERALLS.
Hle is sober, disciplined, assiduous,
Today he has discarded the gray uni
form of the fighters and is ready to
don his old overalls, He wants peace
and work. Production is going to be
the salvation of the country, and for
this salvation we need the intelli
gent assistance of the United States,
Not money, but raw material should
be given, us. Raw material and cred
it. The old war debt will be paid
without any derangement of finan
cial or social conditions in Italy if
the means of employing our men is
given us. |
During the war Italy has doubled |
her industrial capacity. Workshops‘
equaling, and in some cases rivulim:.l
the greatest in the world have sprung
up in the north. The exploitation of
her water power has also increased
enormously, Her hydraulic wealth in
proportion to her area surpasses that
of all other European coutries ex
cept Switzerland and is far ahead
of the United States and Canada.
CHEAP POWER. ,
This superiority in cheap power
places Italy in the position of being
able to distance all other countries in
hydroelectric applications, which |
means tremendous prosperity for the
future.
In a few years Italy’s consumption
of coal will be more than halved. The
electrification of her raflroads alone
will mean an annual saving of 1,200,-
000 tons of the 2,500,0000 now con
sumed on the entire railway system.
Apart from the feeding of railroads
with “white fuel,” which is a reality
of tomorrow, Italy has already begun
to apply electricity to her iron and
steel works, which in thé past deter-!
mined the spectacular importation of
2,000,000 tons of coal Elevtroremh
lurgy is now appiied in the Valle
d'Aosta to the fusion of fine gast iron |
and the production of the finest Iype»|
of steel,
GREAT OPPORTUNITIES.
Everywhere there are signs of the
greatest prosperity and of untold op
portunities. Even now ltaly produmw‘
enough mineral ore to be nearly self
supporting, She is rich in sulphur
“and has the monopoly of marble, She
; has the supremacy in Europe and the
Orient in the production of silk, and
}h"r cotton mills rival in activity any
oth@rs in Furope,
In the automobile industry Ttaly oc
cupies a leading place Her agricul
tural resources are great and only
inood a more scientific exploitment to
double their production,
But Italy lacks copper, lead, zinc,
mercury, and has not enpugh crude
oil for her consumption. Italy needs
cotton from America, and she needs
right now agricultural machines.
She needs ships, hecause a few years
must go by before her yards have re
placed in adequate proportion her
commercial fleet, which proportion
ately has suffered twice as much as
that of any other belligerent from the
ruthless submarine war,
For all her neads Italy could pay.
but she would be strangling herself
in doing so. It would mean her eco
nomic suleide, and would involve an
inflation of paper eirculation and a
consequent increase in the cost of
living, with its natural reaction on the
soclal structure,

same methods as the ordinary trader

good, his prospects good, but whom’

America needs business, just as we '
need industrial and commercial ex- |

largest locomotive building works in
America entering a contract with the
Polish government for the supply of
150 locomotives at $46,000 each, pay- |
able in ten years with Polish govern

the lookout*for business all over the|
world and to welcome this disposition |
to meet business half way on fairl

One should not forget that Italy
presents wonderful opportunities. If
America needs business and Italy
needs credit, why not follow the law
of supply and demand? Why not deall
with the matter as partners, in the.
interest of both? 4
At present our paper circulation is

three times as big a price as land.ln‘
