A week-end traveling sales school
is an Innovation that has been In
augurated by the Goodyear Tire and
Rubber Company, Akron, Ohle, in fur
nishing sales instruction to the sales
men of Its various branch offices
throughout the country.
Formerly It was the custom to
assemble the salesmen from varl
ous districts into one large class at
the main offices at Akron for instruc
tion, but as pressure of business made
it inadvisable to follow out this plan
further, because of the loss of time
entailed while away from thelr terri
torles, the plan of instructing these
men In their own branch offices by
capable instructors, was adopted.
Under the direction of Lake Jones,
director of sales instruction, these
week-end schools have now operated
in & dozen of the seventy-five wood
year branches, and have proven 8o
successful that the plan will be con
tinued until all have been covered.
“One of the important advantages
of this new plan” says Mr. Jones,
“is that we can include the credit
men, service men and office mana
gers, dlong with the salesmen, and are
able to give them all instruction con
cerning credits, policies, product and
salesmanship, in their own particular
field, without disturbing to any ap
preciable extent, the transaction of
business.
“We have found that credit, service
and office men are greatly benefited
by & good working knowledge of poli
cles and product and have therefore
made these classes avallable for them
as well as for the salesmen.
“T'he first three days of the week
are spent by the instructors in mak
ing & thorough survey of the partic
ulae ftleld Sovered oy the Goodyear
branch, while Thursday, Friday and
Baturday are given over to instruc
tion.
“Pime was when B eny line of bus
tness, new men, either without prao
tical experience in selling or without
& knowledge of the new line taken
up, were sent out to the trade and
expected to obtain satisfactory re
sults,
“The new way, which has veen
adopted by the leaders In big business
today, s to thoroughly equip each
salesman with a comprehensive
knowledge of his company's product
and mrrohandising policies, before let.
ting him make his intreductory trip.
“Efficlency in sales organization
{s one of the prime requisites of big
business today and the plan of car
rying approved sales instruction to
salesmen, in schools, we have found
to be the most effective one. We find
that even our best men, whose ser
vices have been highly satisfactory,
are benefited by the classroom work
pro¥ided in these schools. The class

with the factory and play an impor
tant part in keeping up enthusiasm.
“One of the most beneficial re
sults that we get from these schools
is the big, broad-gauged idea about
developing trade that our men geot.
By giving them the big points about
salesmanship that have survived the
many hard campaigns for business we
transmit to them the spirit of confi
dence so essential to success in selling
goods.” ‘
400,000 Motor
Boats Now in
United States
The new federal numbering act,
reduiring the registration of pleasure
motor boats, which is in force this
season for the first time, requires that
all undocumented motor boats used
for pleasure purposes be registered
and carry numbers on their bews, in
somewhat the same manner as lU
oense plates are used on motor cars.
Compllation of the lists under this
pumbering act has brought out the
faot that there are about 400,000 mo
tor boats in use in the United States
of all classes,
The registration is for the purpose
of establishing the identity of every
owner, the home port of the boat, and
making any boat easily recognizable.
There are about 176,000 such boats.
All yachts of more than sixteen
gross tong are required to be docu
mented and must carry ship's papers
by laws of navigation which have
been in force for years, There are
about 10,000 such yachts In commis
sion,
Motor boats used on waterways not
subject to federal jurisdiction, like
Lake George ,which is not tributary
to tide water and is under the State
laws, are not required to be regls
tered. The same rule applies, of
course, to similar lakes ia other
States, There are perhaps 40,000 such
boats.
In no other branch of the automo
tive industries—unless in the airplane
-i8 magneto Ignition so generally
used to fire the gas that makes the
power in the motor engine. Depend
able magneto ignition is a vital ne
cessity where there are no service
stations to help one out of difficul
tles, and the lives of crew and pas
sengers would be at the mercy of
every squall or “blow” should the en
gine “stall”
Boats with detachable oy outboard
motors do not have Lo be registered,
and It is estimated that there are
about 60,000 of them. The remainder
of the 400,000 motor boats is made up
of boats used for commercial purposes
—carrying passengers and freight,
tishing, etc.

Burd High Compression Piston Rings are installed in
thousands of the finest motor cars. Many manufacturers,
in order to give their customers the best of everything, have
been willing to pay the small extra cost of Burd High Com
pression Piston Rings.
Maximum motor efficiency and minimum operating ex
pense can be obtained in no other way.
BURD QUICK SEATING PISTON RINGS
The Burd Quick Seating Piston Ring is a ring which, as the name indicates, will
quickly obtain a perfect seat against the eylinder walls. Note the surface of the
outside eircumference of the ring. A channel, two thousandths in depth is ground
into the face of it. The outside edges soon adapt themselves to the eylinder sur
face in either newly reground or eylinders having seen varying degrees of service
and enable the ring to secure quickly a full and efficient bearing against the eylin
der walls. Highly recommended by mechanics and engineers.
If your dealer does not handle Burd Piston Rings write direct to
us and we will send you the name of the nearest dealer.
