Citizens of Iron County Were

Armed to Protect Attorney
Against Arrest,

IRON RIVIER, Mich, Feb, 27 —A
more serious phuase of the: “fron
County rum revolt was disclosed
today, when it was learned that 3.000
citizens of the county, a majority
of them miners, were prepared dur
ing the invasion of Maj. A. V. Dal
rymple's prohibition agents to resist
by force the arresting without war
rants of State’'s Attornéy Martin
McDonough or other citizens of ‘the
county.
According to stutements made by
ellzens, it was planned to hold up
the train which was to bear the as
rested ~itizens from the county and
take them from the federal agents,
wih bloodshed if necessary. That the
“prohibition expeditionary foree” was
not menaced on its arrival was said
by friends of McDonough to. be due
to a tour of the county made by him,
during which he counseléd dalmness
on the part of all citizens,
Public sentiment nere is that the
citizenship generally is law-abiding
and has not broken the prohibition
amendment, While many of the rea
idents have large “private stoeks"
in their cellars, they feel they have

today in a public hearing held for the
double purpose of “setting Lron Coun
ty right” before the rest of the United
States, and to convince federal ofe
ficials that State's Attorney Me-

An attempt to prove that many of
the nominating petitions circulated in
behalf of the 1918 sendtorial candi
daey of Jameg W. . Helme, Henry
Henry Ford’s oppouent in the Demo
cratic primariese were written by
Richard Fletcher, State labor com
missioner and a Newberry henchman,
'was expected to occeupy part ofs to
day's session of the Newberry trial
The government's contention is,
many of the petitions for Helme, al
!leged to have run against Fottr:t
‘the behest of the Newberry cdam
|paignvrs, gétting a “salary” for so
Idmns:. were prepared by Fletcher in
| his own handwriting. The governi:
| ment also contends that numerous
{of the petition signatures, of which
| votes polled by Helme, were false.
{there were more than the number of
Francis B. Courtnéy of Detroit, a
handwriting expert, will be called on
today to establish the handwriting as
Fletcher's. Whether other of the de
,fendamls will be involved was not
revealed by government counsel.
‘ The campaign activities of Fletcher
have been mentioned many times in
the course of the trial. Various bits
of testimony have charged him with
threatening to ‘‘railroad” William
McKeighan to the penitentiary to get
the support of thecity of Flint, with
fixing new stone roads ag the present
Bay County would get if it went for
Newberry, and with boasting in the
State House at lLansing that $500,000
was spent in putting Newberry over.
