New Bill Introduced in House of
|
Commons Opposed by Ulster- |
i |
men, Says Cardinal Logue.
| e i
By CARDINAL MICHAEL LOGUE,
Roman Catholic Primate of All
Ireland, |
(Written Expressly: for Univeru!j
Service. Special Cable Dispatch.)
ARMAGH, COUNTY ARMAGH,/|
ULSTER, Ireland, Keb. 26.—My own
feelings, and those of all Irishmen,
toward this bill (the new home rule |
bill introduced in Commons \Wednes
day), which threatens to dismember
the country, are that it settles noth-!'
‘ing; that it is worse than useless, !
and that it does not make for tran
quillity in Ireland. '
Tha"vast majority of Ulstermen is!
strictly opposed to the bill {
Leaving dut Belfast, the majdrity
of Ulster is anti-Carsonite. It is,
Belfast alone for which Sir Bdward |
Carsoh speaks when heymentions thet
“people of Ulster.” ;
If the whole province were taken |
into account, Carson and his rum-:
radgy would be a pitiable minority. |
Therefore, this bill, which is like a
pateh quilt, is introduced for Carson’s
benefit. g ,
NATIONALISTS TO SUFFER.
A handful of Protestants are taken '
here and there, and that'is what is)
called the freedom of Ulster. The|
Nationalist minority in the northeast |
corner will fare badly under the Car- !
sonite regime, It will be made to|
suffer all the torments by the re- |
actionary clique. |
The arrangement will give the
Catholics no show, whereas at pres
ent in the south and southwest of
Ireland Protestant merchants are
among the most prosperouss
If Lloyd George attempts to en
force this measure the south will be |
immediately cut off from the bifl."
wholesale trade which the Belfast
merchants do in that part of Irpl:lnu‘l.'
1 am convinced that if a s:‘lisf:wtnl‘_\'l
measure of home rule were intro- |
duced the people would acecept it
but it must be one measure applied
to tha whole of Ireland. |
The present regime of repression,
deportations and reprisals will vnn-[
tinue as long as England denies this.
DISCREDITS REPUBLIC.
Personally, not being a Sinn Fein
er, I believe a republic is out of the
question. While it is true that Irish- l
men would defend their country |
against armed invasion by any pow- |
er in the event of gaining total sep-|
aration it must be remembered that
big empires count nowadays, :md!
Ireland has not the resources to de
fend herself against a formidable en
emy.
My own solution is that Ireland!
should remain within the British |
Empire, with a Parliament similar’
to that of Canada or Australia, con- |
trolling her own finances and 7|‘:mu.|
We are now bled by overtaxation
and regulations hindering our lr:nloi
and the tragedy is that yvears of ex- |
perience have taught us that England |
is unwilling to give us such decent
measures, l

Home Rule Bill |
By DANIEL O'CONNELL,
Universal Staff Correspondent. Spe
cial Cable Dispatch. '
DUBLIN, Feb, 26.—Catholics all
over Ireland are voicing determined !
opposition against the new home rule |
bill introduced in the House of Com- |
mons yesterday. They point out par- |
ticularly that Cardinal Legue, St.|
Patrick’s sucecessor in the Diocese
of Armagh, is placed under Orange |
rule by the new measure. St, }‘u'-l
rick's burial place and other historic
spots dear to Irish hearts will be cut
away from national life and placed
under Carsonite sway.

five children in Finland.,”

Cheer Up!
By John Kendrick Bangs.
NO EMBARGO.
W}{EN Charon comes to take
me o'er
The river on his ferry .
I hope I'll face that other shore
\With spirit blithe and merry.
And take the wholesome things
of earth,
Its love and joyous laughter
And all its glorious gifts of
worth ?
Along to the hereafter.
For that's the wealth that never
dies,
And holds the joyous leaven
That man may carry as he plies
The path ’'twixt earth and
