Campa'gn Director Buddy Ex
| plains Why This Sum Spure
| Members to Interest,
; “Why are th. dues In the Chamber
of Commerce fixea at $26. what can
the chamber do with soo much
money? has been asked more often
than amy other question since the
plans for giving the Atlanta chamber
4,000 members were first announced,
according to Lewis Buddy, the cam
paign director, ‘
“A uniform membership fee of $25
n year, pledged for three years, ms
the plan of financing the chamber
which has been adoptod as the re
sult of years of experience and ex
periments,” he sald Friday. “This
plan has not been abandoned or
modified by any chamber of com
merce which has tested it and no
single instance of failure has been
charged up against it. It is a per
f.ctly sound finanecial plan, com
bining all the good features of pre
vious methods and eliminating the
bad ones. 1
“Eighty per cent of the 'orth‘
while chambers of commerce in this
country and Canada hav. dues of $25 |
or more. These organizations are
made up of hard headed business
men, in large part, who had rather
invest $25 a year In a genuine com
munity organization than donate §lO
to a partial success or a failure, |
$25 CREATES INTEREST.
“Entircly apart from the financial
mm‘wornnnn, a $lO member is not
worth as much to any organization
as a $25 member. His inteerst is
commensurate with the amount of
money he pays. A S2O member gives
more of himself. He glves
more serious thought to the activities
of the body with which he is con
nected. In other words he is m@re
interested, and inter sted members
are the kind the Chamber of Com
merce needs, ‘
“In addition to the Individuals in
this community, there are eligible to
membership in the Chamber of Com- ,
merce a considerable number of
concerns, industries and some men
whoso interests in and responsibility
to the community are so large thatl
they should invest more for the sup- l
port ©f the Chamber of Commerce
than the individual of small meana |
¥or these the plural memb. rship
plan ls offered —pledges for from two
to 100 memberships. '
“To guard against the charge that
such a subscription offers tempt tion
to dominatg, the plan provides that
guch a subserib. r ghall have one vote
only. The concern or individual will
assign ontright all the memberships
except one to young men and women
in the business, or to such others as
may be selected,
YOUNG MEN ENTER. \
“This brings into the Chamber of
Commerce, with full membership
rights and privileges, groups of
younger business mer who {n a few
yvears will be heads of departments
partners or even owners. gaining
their interest at once in the city's
problems and itg future, and insuring
the presence of active working mem
bers when the present industria)l and
commercial leaders shall have retired.
“If thn,Atlnnla Chamber of Com
merce is to do the things the eciti
zens want done, it must have an
adcquate income. In addition to the
maintenance of suitable quarters and
an efficient staff, the modern Cham
ber of Commerce is callad npon to
meet & multitude of responsibilities.
“The actual cost of maintaining «
Chamber of Commeree worthy of the
name is from §l6 to sl9 a year for
each member This fact is well es
tablished. When the body hecomes a
