WASHINGTON, March 17.—Camp
Gordon, near Atlanta, and Camp
Benning, near Columbus, Ga, are to
be made available for the extension
of the army’s vocational course in
agriculture and animal husbandry
soon, it is learned at the war de
partment.
Enlisted men are to bhe taught how
to raise cows, pigs and chickens and
trained in the géneral duties of farm
management. The first development
in this direction is to be undertaken
¥t, once at Charleston, 8. C., under
.H’rectlon of Dr. E."M. Ranck, develop~
ment epert in animal irdustry, who
#1 act as civilian advisor to the
commanng general of the South
eastern Division. Doctor Ranck is
knowyn throughout -the Southeastern
States as g former State veterinarian
of Mississippi and was an important
factor in the eradication of the cattle
tick in that State. .
Agricultural training of men in the
army will soon be extended also to
Camp PBragg, N, C.; Camp Jackson,
8, C.; Camp Pike, Ark, and Camp
Lee, Va.
Doctor Ranck believes many men
unable to pass the entrahce.require
ments for college or unable to pay the
expenses of a college course are en
-4 listing in th army to obtain voca
tional training along special agricul
tural lines,
According to present plans livestock
will 8% purchased for the ‘school by
experts and each camp will have a
emall herd of god dairy cattle, pure
bred hogs, sheep, beef cattle, chickens
and stands of bees, The soldier who
undertakes this study will be trained,

leges are being arranged for the rifle
team of the R. O. T. C. unit at Geor

Dies in Philadelphia
MACON, Ga., March 17.—Orsamus
Allen Bowen, manager of the Macon
plant of the Southern Cotton Oil
Company, died in the University Hos
pital in Philadelphia yesterday, ac
cording to messages received by rel
atives hera. Mr. Bowen had been in
111 health for geveral months and was
taken to Philadelphia for treatment.
Mr., Bowen was well known through
out this section. He came to Macon
from Pendleton, S. C, in 1899, soon
after assuming the management of
the Macon plant.
Mr, Bowen is survived by his wife,
who was- Miss Louisa Napier; two
children, Eiizabeth and Louise; four
children by a former marriage, O. A,
Bowen Jr. of Greenville, S. C.; Edwin
T. of Macon; Robert Adger.Jr., and
Mrs. Kirk Allen of Greenville. Two
brothers and one sister also survive,
George Bowen of Birmingham, Ala.;
JRobert Adger Bowen of New York
and Mrs. Frank E. Taylor of Macon.

Cake Kept 14 Years in

Brandy Cut at Wedding
ST. LOUIS, M 0.,, March 17.—The
report that a fourteen-year-old wed
ding 'eake was to be served at the
nuptial breakfast of Miss Geraldine
Isabelle Buchanan and Lieutenant
Austin Smith Parker didn’t interfere
with a full attendance of all invited
guests at the Hotel Statler recently.
Sh-sh-s. The venerable cake was
preserved in brandy.
The cake was made from a recipe
for a Chinese fruit cake and “pickled”
by Mr. and Mrs. Thomas J. Buchanan,
parents of the bride, in their home at
California, Mo., to be served at the
first wedding in the family. |
War romance added interest to the
ceremony. = Miss Buchanan as a war
worker met Lieutenant Parker, then
an artillery officer, at the Harvard
canteen in New York. The groom’s
home {8 in Greenville, 8. C., and he
is a member of a Greenville-New
York banking and brokerage firm,
French Seek to Free

Prisoners in Russia

PARIS, - March 17—The French
have opened official negotiations at
Copenhagen for the release of the
French prisoners held in Russia, it
was revealed today by Marcel Hutin
in the Echo de Paris. Up to this
time the‘l'rench have persistently re
fused to deal with the Russian bol
sheviki. v
According to M. Hutin, a French
representative 1s conferring with
Boris Litvinoff, of the soviet foreign
office, There is no official confirma«-
tion of the announcement.
