of such schools throughout the State
with funds sufficient and many men
and women who were not able to
read or write six months ago, are
now getting along splendidly in
some of the higher work.
% About 800 wvoting white persons,
fhembers of the commission said, in
Atlanta lost the opportunity to learn
the three “R's” when they were
young, it was estimated.
At present, the principal demands
for the schools are in the factory dis
tricts. There is an average atten
dance of thirty pupils in each of the

Destroying of Olives
(By International News Service.)
NEW ORLEANS, March 18.—The
government has seized 101 barrels
and 95 kegs of olives shipped by Sam
Streva of Los Angeles to a local
firm. They will be destroyed. None
was sold before the seizure, which
was made as a precaution against
ptomaine poisoning, as the barrels
contained almost all brine.
