Tlw reporta on the acreage and con
Jltlon of the cotton crop has proved too
ieavy a load for the market to carry.
They are not all one way, nor are
they from the enino source, naverth*
lets they go to make a heavy load.
Each report has Its followers, hence
opinion Is hopelessly divided, so much
•o that the course of prices at present
does not indicate which side of the ac
count Is most confident.
At the moment tho bears are ap
parently making most and better use
of reports emanating from statisticians
who figure out the largest acreage and
hUher conditions. In that the trend of
prices today during -the early trading
was distinctly downward.
Liverpool, after a three days’ holi
day during which time the govern
ment acreage and condition report,
ihlch was considered by the trade
aenerally as bullish, opened this morn-
ins at an advance such as frequently
occurs under normal conditions, the

which was barely steady and un

midday prices continued on the down
grade, though on the reading of the
government weekly weather report
there was an Improvement of a point
° The New York Sun, In Its review of
the cotton market yesterday. Says;'
"Two years ago; Indeed, In the year
when the crop waa 13,350,000 bales, the
condition at this tlpie was only S3, or
11-2 per cent lower than It Is now.
But the market, apart from all this,
was In a condition to advance. Any
body who has given the slightest at
tention to the technical situation knows
that It lias been heavily sold for the
decline for some time past by the South
and that the local element. Including
not a few of the Wall street traders,
had been encouraged to take the short
side hy the collapse of the May and
July options last week and the gener
ally favorable weather for somo weeks
past. The advance yesterday must be
ascribed largely to the over-crowding
of the bear side, although It was due
In some measure early In the day to
manipulation by the bull leader and
some of his follower!.’'
C. D. Freeman A Co. say of the day’s
market: "The market shows consider
able steadiness, despite rather heavy
selling. The underestimate of the acre
age has little to do with the strength,
hut the feeling prevail* that abort
selling should be cautious In view of
the possible unfavorable crop develop
ments as the season progresses.”
The market was steady In the after
noon. with trading very dull, both sides
apiwrently allowing the market to drift.
