IN EARLY TRADING
Decline Resulted From
Persistent Selling.
WEATHER IN THE BELT CONTIN
UES OF A FAVORABLE
CHARACTER.
The reporta on the acreage and con
diilnn of the cotton crop has proved too
heavy a load for the market to carry.
They are not all one way. nor are
they from the same source, neverthe
Irss they go to make a heavy load.
Each report has Its followers, hence
opinion l» hopelessly divided, bo much
•n that the course of prices at present
does not Indicate which side of tho ac
count Is most confident.
At the moment the bears are ap
parently making moat and better uso
of reports emanating from statisticians
who figure out the largest acreage and
higher conditions. In that tho trend of
prices today during the early trading
was distinctly downward.
Liverpool, after a three days’ holi
day during which tlmo the govern
ment acreage and condition report,
which was considered by tho trade
generally as bullish, opened this morn
ing at an advance such as frequently
occurs under normal conditions, the
close showed the opening advance en
tirely wiped out, the tono being easy at
| to 5 points below Friday's finals.
Hales of spot cotton were only 6.000
bales, at an advance of 3 points; mid
dling 6.05. . ,
This was not encouraging to the
American market, which gave the bears
confidence, they becoming rather ag
gressive shortly aftor tho opening,
which was barely steady and un
changed to 4 points lower, and up to
midday prices continued on tho down
grade, though on tho reading of the
government weekly weather report
there was an Improvement of a point
° The°N.w York Sun, In Its rovlow of
the cotton market yesterday, says:
■'Two years ago, Indeed, In the year
when the crop was 11,(50,000 bales; the
condition at this time was only II, or
l l-s per cent lower than It is now.
But the market, apart from all this,
was In a condition to advance. Any
body who has given the slightest at
tention to the technical situation knows
that It has been heavily sold for tho
decline for some time post by the South
and that the local clement. Including
not a few of the Wall street traders,
had been encouraged to tnke tho short
side by the collapse of the May and
July options lest week and tho gener
ally favorable weather for aomo weeks
past. Tho advance yesterday must bo
ascribed largely to the over-crowding
of the bear side, although It wob duo
In some measurs early In tho day to
manipulation by the bull leader and
some of his followers."
C. D. Freeman A Co. say of the day's
market: “The market shown consider
able steadiness, despite rather heavy
selling. The underestimate of the acre
age haa little to do with the strength,
but the feeling prevails that short
, selling should be cautious In view of
the possible unfavorable crop develop
ments as the season progresses."
The market was steady In the after
toon, with trading very dull, both sides
tpparently allowing the market to drift.

In the foreign market were decidedly
reassuring and seemed to reflect a keen
appreciation of the
port yesterday, but ;
came Imbued with
ments that the American markets con
tlnue to express and o
after point, finally closing 3 to 6 points
lower than Friday's levels. Spot sales
showed a marked curtailment, only
5,000 bales being sold, but at an ad
vance of 3 points. Exactly upon what
basis tho trade figures yesterday’s re
port as bearish U somewhat difficult
ion, for tho condition ost|.
,6 Is slightly below the aver-
ago for the post ten years, while there
Is nothing In the acreago Increase of
8.2 to Justify any reckless selling on
the part of the bears. An average yield
on the acreage planted would be less
than the requisite 12,000,000 bales, and
the records of past seasons prove that
fully as many have produced less as
have yielded more than the aceroge;
while, on the other hand, with the
advent of a change for the worse In the
weather—and it u not unreasonable to
assume that tha excellent conditions
that have hitherto prevailed con be
prolonged Indefinitely—crop accounts
will become less glowing and Induce
sufficient buying to bring about a good
reaction. With this consideration In
view, and the fact that the world's con
sumption shows a steady Increase with
the culmination of each year, there ap-
mars little cause to justify seriously
ower prices for some time to come
but In tha meantime tho character o
the weather Is the Influence of tho mo
ment and may be expected to cause
fluctuations sufficiently broad to Induce
Increased market Interest.
