ot the real and personal property of the
county, and haa forwarded It to the
comptroller general to be passed upon
by the atate board of equalization
which meets In August.
Tha figures may b-« slightly changed
and those on the abstract do not In
clude railroad property.
Tha Increase for the county la a lit
tle more then a half million dollars
over last year.
Tha slats board haa tha powar to
raise or lower tha property In any
county. The auditor haa not'received
the returns of tha railroad property and
Insurance companies, as these returns
come through the comptroller general’s
office. It Is understood that the rail
road assessments have been materially
Increased thla year. Accepting the as
sessment of these corporations as they
stood last year will show a total as
sessment of $4,424,IM, or an Increase
over last year of-1 (01,>10.
SUES IRON WORKS
FOR $20,000 DAMAGE

Columbus, Ga^ June 4.-—Mrs. R. E.
Brooks, of Girard, Ala, has sued for
110,000 for tha life of her husband,
H. K Brooks, whose death was caused
by a piston-head exploding at the Co
lumbus Iron works two months ago.
It was a peculiar accident, and only
tbe second one ot the kind within the
knowledge of old employees of the Iron
works.
A piston-head from a cylinder of.a
steamboat waa being healed In a fur
nace when It exploded, creating hav
oc, and fatally wounding Brooks, who
raa standing near.
Thomas F. Fotta also sues for $10,-
000 for Injuries received In the asms
accident.

MURDERED MAN'S WIFE
PLACED UNDER SUSPICION

thorities are clearing up, the mystery
of the death of the young Italian gro-
cer, Joseph Plcone, whose lifeless body
waa found In his bedroom' 8unday
evening. - Murder Is the theory upon
which the Investigation Is being fol
lowed. Bo far the Identity ot the party
who committed the deed haa not been
learned, but Mrs. Plcone, the dead
man's wife, haa admitted that .he threw
the revolver, with which the deed waa
probably done. Into a privy vault In
the rear of the premises. She said
at that time also that she was asleep
w hen her husband met death, and had
heard no pistol shqjn and had not seen
any weapon near when she discovered
her husband's body.

Berger A Hon, died suddenly and alone

evening from Dr. Bhurly's office, where
she had been treated for lung trouble,
tn her home at 025 Trumbull street.
Her father, Superintendent ot Police
Downey, hod ordered the cab to take
the young woman home.
Arriving at the destination, the
driver of the cab opened tbe door of
the vehicle end found the young wom
an dead. Doctors pronounced deeth
due to heart trouble. Mrs. Berger was
married last October.

son, a Buffalo business man, spent an

station wondering whether ha would be

Robinson was arrested for playfully
upsetting a half doten potted plants
at Murray's restaurant, Broadway and

Chattanooga, Tenn., June 4.—In. a
telegram Governor John I. Cox denies
the statement that he Is satisfied with
the actions of the recent Nashville
convention and that he will bow to the
will of the Democracy of ths state. He
says that he would have been satisfied
with the will of the majority, but that
the wholesale unseating of‘ his dele
gates, fairly and honestly elected ln
Wilson, Maury, Smith, Weakley, Wash
ington and other counties, was not In
accordance wltb the will of the ma
jority, but waa made possible by the
Greene county trade and hence there Is
little satisfaction In the result of the
convention.

New Orleans, La., June 4.—With a
view to building a 30-mlle Irrigation
canal the Union Rice and Irrigation
Company haa been organised. The
project Is a big om and when It has
been successfully undertaken 26,000
acres of fine rice land tn southwest
ern Louisiana will stand a better show
of development than under present
conditions. The canal will extend
from Washington across 8t. Landry
parish to Msmou Prairie.
The company Is capitalised at $1,
400,000, and among the stockholders
are a number of prominent Phila
delphians, who are at present on a trip
over the route with J. Franklin
Schnell and L. E. I.lttell. of Opelousas,
who are In charge ot the undertaking.

pany haa applied for a charter here for
the purpose of building a 1 railroad from
this city to the Walden’s ridge coal
and Iron belt and to erect a bridge
across the Tennessee river. The capi
tal stock Is 6100,000 anil the Incorpora

This step followed tho recent visit of
