OF THE COTTON MARKET
was still very much vg lun
market, although ther* was after all no
very striking feature. Still that month was
stronger here and In Now Orleans than In
any other. There is said to bo n In rye
short Interest In both markets. Needhsa
to say. there Is a big short Interest In (he
next crop too. But Just at tho moment
the attention of the trade la focussed on
July. The crop movement at the same time
In pretty light and the efflux of cotton to
foreign markets pretty large. Bulls lay
some stiess on the fact that the govern
ment s estimate of the Increase In acreage
Is practically 4 por cent Instead of 6.2 per
cent os everybody supposed. But this Is
scarcely a matter to dwell upon. All the
facts nnd circumstances surrounding the
case seem to point Inevitably to the con
clusion that tho Increase li very much
larger than this, and very few are fooled
by assertions to the contrary. Whether
the big acreage will yield n big crop is
another matter, for cotton history shows
very dearly that n largo area by no means
necessarily Indicates a large yield. The
weather, then, is tho thing to watch,

New York, June 13.—Today's mar

tle actual newt, a pronounced uncer
tainty among the profeislonal traders
and In consequence a very Irregular
price movement. Two ot three stocks
continued to be bought heavily,.but for
reasons which seemed to be entirely
distinct from considerations governing
the general market. The buying of St.
Paul, which made the greatest show of
strength, was once more a subject of
mystery to tlje trading party.
The only other stock to show* re
sistance was Baltimore and Ohio,
hlch. under the same rumors that
were mad** use uf yesterday, rose a
point and held Its gain. In other
quarters the market during the fore
noon was heavy and lost ground
steadily. Larger blocks were for salo
at the declining prices than have ap
peared for some time, with special
weakness In the Steel shares. Union
Pacific, Copper, Reading and Brooklyn
Rapid Transit.
In tlie stock market Initial prices
with comparatively few exceptions, In
cluding Amalgamated, which gained
1-8, showed declines. Erie, New York
CentraJ, Colorado Fuel and Pennsyl
vania railroad started 1-8 lower; Read
ing and Brooklyn Rapid Transit, 1-4,
and Union Pacific, 1-4 per cent.
Thf stock market waa made strong
at the opening by jl clique of strong
bull traders, but stocks were in free

ly everything on the list shaded off

New Orleans, June It.—Liverpool
advices were M the effect that the
market', undertone had become very
weak and that It was n difficult mat
ter to nil cotton. The ,l" lining Mm
could, In all probability, be attributed
to the very favorable crop report, that
continue to be received, and options
netted a lots of 5 point* over yester
day's close. Spot transaction, .bow
ed a healthy Increase, however,
amounting to 10,040 bales at 2 point,
lower. The July liquidation, whll. not
■o active today as recently, neverthe-
continue, to be a tentative In
fluence In .upportlng the market.
Some aggrcaalvenea. wa* displayed by
the Bhort aide lit the earlier trad
ing, but the market ofrered so much
resistance that bearish tactics were
more or leas abandoned, although the
heavy ralne In the eastern belt were
generally considered beneficial. For
the moment, and ponding the final
outcome of the July ipecter, the-mar
ket may not entirely reflect by price-
changes the real character of the
weather,' as an influence, neverthe
less. it la a weather market, pure and
simple, and should no extensive re
port. of damage be received In the
near future. It la more than likely
that some concerted action on the part
of the bears will soon be witnessed,
a. sentiment Mem. to be growing
stronger dally In favor of lower
prices.
Chicago, June It.—WHEAT mar
ket, after opening; as a result of the
advance in Liverpool cables, scored
quite a fair reaction, due to profit-
taking by local long, and refllng br
commission hotues. Trad, through-
out waa featureless and of professional
character. So lon#r a* the ware of
pessimism continues to awuap tne
country, bullish news, whether real or
fictitious, will not only be at an exor
bitant pfumlum, but will be manufac
tured to suit the bulls, hence It would
New Orleans, and It Is Impossible to
forecast the price movement with any
degree of certainty. We believe that
the selling of the October option has
been overdone and shorts In this op
tion may be In a very uncomfortable
position before the movement begins.
On weak spots would buy.
STOCKS—Trading on a limited scale
In the stock market this morning, and
Irregularity in prl<e movements. The
list showed considerable weakness with
tho exception of St. Paul which contln
ued to advance, selling at 182, the now
high record on this movement. Weak
ness In Brooklyn Rapid Transit, and
tha Steel Issues, which were Inclined to
drag the balance of the market wltl
them. After tho noon hour, the mar
ket became very dull. Tho advance In
St. Paul Is on tho effort of the inside
party t<> make tho rights look an at
tractive as possible. The reports of the
subsidiary companies of Amalgamated
Copper make a fine showing, and on
any renewal of activity tills htock will
Hell much higher.
L. J. ANDER80N & CO/8
DAILY MARKET LETTER,
- NOW York. June IS.—-A reactionary
tendency In the cotton future market
today,, aue principally to profit taking
and some selling on account of reports
of showers In some sections, which
have been needing rain. The Liverpool
market was about as expected on the
opening, with sales of 7,000 bales, but
eased off during the session In re-
sponBo to the easier fone In our mar
ket. Tho markets as a whole have
and light offerings. While the bears
argue that the excellent condition of
the crop will ultimately force prices
lower, the bulls on the other hand con
tinue to believe In the unusual con
sumption and the necessity for all the
cotton that can be produced from the
present acreage, while experience In the
,000,000 bales Is likely and
consequent shortage In supplies dur
ing the next twelve months.
