SEABOARD. I
Outdoor Life for Girls
By JULIA O'KEEFB NELSON.
I envy those Young .Men's chrl-tlan I decorously to and from school—the#
Association boys their coming outing 1 'l"’ 1 f play baseball -t football, and snt
at PeSnorest. They are to carry wtth IS^fftS.ajh.M.Manii in.Atlanta ptaya
them, among other accoutrements,
suit of old clothes (think of the hep-
plnees to the boy In that adjective, old),
games, reading matter, musical Instru-
tnonta, cameras, note book, fishing
tackle, bathing suit, Bible and revival
song book”
Their dallr program Is:
T s. m.—Reveille and fisg raising.
7:10 n. m.—Breakfast.
I s. m.—Camp duties.
*:20 s. m.—Games, rambles, basting,
swimming lessons, bathing, fishing.
11:45 a. m.—Bible study.
1:20 p. in.—Dinner.
.Afternoon spent In sports.
4:80 p. in.—Swimming.
7 p. m.—Supper.
8 p. m.—Retreat and flag lowering.
8:15 p. m.—Camp fire.
8:46 p. m.—Evening prayer.
8:15 p. m.—"Tattoo.
6:20 p. m.—"Taps.”
I can see ths pretty little town ot
Demorest, an example of Northern
thrift nml goodness, with Us pictur
esque lake, over which I have passed
so often on my trips higher up In the
mountains, Its neat houses perched on
hills and nt wide spaces apart, and In
the distance the blue mountains.
Those boys will have there the happy
liberty of savagery anil the high elms
nnd wholesome restraints of civiliza
tion. And what ethical opportunities
for tho teachers and preachers who
accompany them! What courage and
qulcknees of reeourre le needed In thoee
outdoor spirts; what patience qnd
courtesy In the csinp duties and Inter
course with comrades. In ths rambles
over nesrbv country anil Ihe excur
sions (doubtless In straw-strewn wag
ons) to Ml. Yonsh and Toccoa and Tal
lulah Falls—what botany may be
taught nnd geology and Hint closs ob
servation which Is needed In every de
partment of life. And what high
ambitions and duties may be Inculcated
In stories around camp fires and In
Bible study nnd songs nnd prayers
under starlit skies.
It seems to me that many a teacher
would be glad of such an opportunity,
becauss there she could live out her
Ideals, unhindered by some meehanl-
■at nnd soul-cramping official, high uii
n the achool system thought. 1 wish
Hml girls might have Just such an
outing. ,
I am glad from my heart for those
young fellows to have sueh wholesome
Measure; but I declare that girls need
t even more then they do. Girls from
ten to twelve years, who walk or ride
bankot ball or gulf. In fact, they have
n mo of iliu Joyous strengthening out
door activities ,,f boys. When n girl
enters her teens tier ivalst too often
grows smaller, her vanity bigger, her
thoughts nbout extravagant dress more
and more absorbing. Alore outdoor
life would benefit girls physically and
mentally, to., in the North camping
out Is the thing, quite us much with
sisters os with brothers. .Many of the
richest, highest bred girls there uro
expert shots and swimmers.
In the program of the Junior Young
Aten's Christian'Association I don't see
anything which would not bo suitable
for girls. I donT know what "retreat"
and "tattoo" and "laps" mean: but If
they are simple little military duties,
which teach accuracy and prompt obe
dience to superiors, I think they would
be good for girl* as Well os boys. I
often hear mothers exclaim: "I dread
vacation. What In the world shall I
do with the childrenT* '
Perceiving this need, some wise peo
ple hnvo "vacation schools"—a happy
mixture of play nnd learning, enough
learning to help Hie children kill time
snd still be of great assistance on their
return to achool. But If this he impos
sible, they might at least, have a whole
some "camping out." If 1 had n magi,-
wsn.l I would Immediately w ave It and
there should appear a Wotnnn like Allas
Celeste Parrish, of Athens, (la. great of
brain, high of atm and loving children.
Out ot pure goodness of lies it -die
would organize and leafi precisely such
n camping out for young girls as Ihe
Junior Young Aten's Christian Asso
ciation will have. Can't the Young
Women's Christian Association of At
lanta begin such n plan? If conducted
ss wisely as Is the nbove outing for
boys, J think I know of.several young
gtrls who would begin Ihe list. That
list would grow rapidly. I w mild not
hnvo thin outing one bit more luxu
rious for girls than la that for bovs.
I think the program for the Junior
Young Alen's Christian Association
would be sn excellent model for the
girls. Alsny gjrls ot birth and mean-
need Just such simplicity amt hardihood
of lire.
I talked and wrote for n gymnasium
for women In Atlanta. Boon It came.
Won't you make outdoor activity come
to Ihe young girls?
If only one person would speak out
on this mntter It might encourage some
one else to do sA. And she In turn
might Inspire still another, nnd so on,
until It would be a thing accomplished.
"Trust thyself."
