Portsmouth, Va., Juno II.—Tha Sea-

of the (jratem le the latest emanation
front Wall street relating to the sys
tem. Railroad circles In thla city are
watching the developments of this
l>inn with no amall degree of Interest,
and especially that pertaining to uni
fying the finances of the Atlanta and
iilrmlngham railway, one of the Sea
board's feeders, which was completed
a short time ago.
Messrs. Blair A Co., and Thomas F.
Hj art, of New York, and their asso-
clatse are behind tho scheme. It In-
< holes also the Cllncbfield Corporation,
v. hi,-It owns SOO.OOO acres of rich coal
hinds and hundreds of coke ovens In
bouthwwet Virginia. The plan will be
u comprehensive scheme for bringing
under one management properties
which are now owned by the same In
terests, but are operated separately.
Provision will l>e made for the retiring
■it the 45,000,000 loan which a ayndl-
Vi All® I’.isn tv sail as it o/ttut-
cate, headed by Blair A Co., made to
the Seaboard when they assumed edn-
trol of the property about two years
nr-,, and which matures next March.
Another loan for 410,000,000 matures In
.M . toil, and provision will also be
made for retiring this.
One of the most Important fsaturea
of tha plan Is to form a holding com-
P ny to take over tho Seaboard enm-
gtany. which owns a majority of the
Mock of the Seaboard Air Lino rall-
.*«», unit, through the hitter, control
(he Atlanta and Birmingham railway.
It Is also a psrt of the plsn under
contemplation to lake over the Clinch-
field coal Helds, better known as the
Cllnchfirlil <*oiporation, which Is own
ed by .Messrs. Blair ,v Co., and Hyan
and ass,-dales.
- This also Includes the taking over
of the South uad Western railroad,
v.Licit is being bdtlt by the Cllnchfleld
Corporation through southwest Vir
ginia, $a»t Tennessee and North Caro
lina. and tapping the Cllnchfield coal
territory. It Is proiwsed to connect the
Seaboard with the South and Western
at Rutherfordton, N. C., and then much
the Norfolk and Western railroad will
K - over the Seaboard Into the south
ern market. Alfred Walter, presi
dent of the Seaboard Air l.lne rail
way, Is chairman of the hoard of direc
tors of the South and Western rail-
(pad.
It Is recognised that this compre
hensive plan of operating the prop
erties under one management would
greatly reduce the ooet of operations
uml ba a good thing for all of the prop
erties, provided the dominant Interests
In the companies do not attempt to
make a “killing" out of the Cllnchfleld
Corporation at the expense of the
Seaboard Air l.lne railway.
