New York, June 1».—Operations In the cotton market represented a con tinuation of the trading prominent for two days now, namely, the liquidation of July and selling of that month by tljoae who did not desire to take up the cotton on delivery day. From the open ing of the market a stream of July poured out and the selling was various ly estimated at from EO.OOO to 75,000 bales. Not since the wholesale liquida tion around 11c has there been sny- thlng like the telling that characterised trading today, and as a result the whole market was unsettled. A pe culiar feature of the operation was enormous purchases of October and December against sales of July, and as a result July went to a discount of several points under October . The weekly weather report could hardly be called favorable. Damage Is said to have been Inflicted by ex cessive rains In the eastern portion of the belt, while the drought In Texas la stated to have assumed serious pro portions. On the report prices ad vanced several points, but renewed liquidation In July started a decline and the general tone of the market was heavy. Conservative operators, however, see nothing In the present weather conditions to Induce selling of the new crops. At the moment It con tlnues to be a scalping market. QIBERT & CLAY'S DAILY COTTON LETTER New Orleans, Jane t».—Early cable, ex. unr.il., ,u„r i,.—re,,,/ r, presied complete aatfarartloo at the ex cellent trade that Manchester reported nnd were expectant of n steady and higher market In consequence, but later lu the neasou options developed considerable weak ness on probable henry liquidation nnd etoMd * to 7 points lower on near positions and three point, lowsr on the fall months Hint sales were lower by 1 point, sales KWW bales. The .continued heavy aelUiig of Jnly by the local bull crowd largely cen tered the Interest of the trade lu that po sition. but the new crop month. dl.pUyeil very little If any weakness owing to the expressed fesr that the drought In south western Texas was causing serious delsy In the development of the crop In that esc- tlon. The government s weekly weather re port bore ont this concern In no uncertain manner, and Indicated that generally up-, favorable conditions In some of the largest cotton growing states—namely, Georgia nnd South Carolina, os account of frequent and excessive rain: nnd Tegst and Louisiana, owing to the more serious aspect that the drought has assumed. Conlldenee ou the part of those favorable to higher prices seems to Dud but little assurance, however. Pennsylvania stock, which closed Inst night st 129H, went on running snlcs st the opening this morning ns high ns 133. It was ertdent, however, that the extreme quota tlons of this rise were duo to frightened covering purchases, and n recoil as violent almost ns the advance followed, Tho general market opened with a rush of buying all through the list, which carried prices up a point or so for tho leading Is sues. But Immediately notice bad to lie taken of the extraordinary weakness In the Interlmrongh-Metropollton shares. The common itock, which had held oat stoutly for several days, was popularly sup posed that unlimited support was to be ex tended at 50, atarted out with aalea at 49 to 48H, nnd In the next few minutes broke wide open.
