Special to The Georgian. Little Rock, Ark., June 26.—George Gilliland, one of the original discov erers of pearls In Black river. Is now operating on White river below Ctar- i nil'm. When the discovery of pearls In Black river was first made few under stood the value of the gems and Gilli land was among this number. Hla first pearls were disposed of at a frac tion of their real worth. He averaged finding n good pearl every three days, ami hnd sold quite a number, when he determined to try for higher prices on hla next lot. A few days after form ing this-resolution he found a larger and prettier pearl than any he had ever taken out, so he sent It to the dealer with the statement that he would take 21,160 for it, and fait that this waa a very fancy price. The dealer vary promply sent his check for 61,160. Later Gilliland saw the dealer and he told him he sold the pearl to Tif fany for 616,000. "But," said the deal er, “I waa aa big a fool for aelllng It to Tiffany for 616,000 sa^you were for selling It to me for 61,160.” The dealer went to New York to make the sale, anil felt that he had driven the bar gain of his life when he unloaded his pearl on Tiffany for 616,000, but hadn't gotten out of New York before he read In a paper where Tiffany had sold that Identical pearl for 666,000. Jt Is said to be, and still ranks, as the finest fresh water pearl ever discov ered. Boon after this transaction Gilliland quit hunting for pearls hlptself and went to buying from others. In three months he had made 17,000, and had the money In a bank. IJ.UUV, This money, he thought ample to satisfy his needs, and he abandoned his effects to accumulate and went to spending with rather a lavish band, for- In a few months his 67.000 was gone. He Is now digging sheila In White river. He hasn’t quite as much money aa ha had when at the height of his success as a pearl buyer, but he baa made something near 61,000 slnca Jan uary selling pearls.
