It Is worthy of note that this 'gigantic vase, which I* more remark- story of the founding of the or der Is most entertainingly told, and to women wearying of the monotony of a lit? of luxury and pleasure-seeking. It may give some valuable hints The order sprang out of a luncheon club organised by four prominent loaders In Atlanta society, who had been schoolmates and close friends during their girlhoods, and whose Intimacy continued after their marriages. Each succeeding hostess of th* club tried to outdo her predecessor In th* elegance of her entertaining, until finally some of the most far-seeing of the member* bgan to perceive that th* purpose of their meetings waa fast being lost In a spirit of formality. At th* last of tbese formal lunch eons, which bad been most elaborate and elegant, a swift decision was made to abandon such entertainments and Instead to organise a charitable club, where th* purpose of enjoyment should not be considered, but whose object should be doing komethlng for other*. The happiness these young women have obtained In their service for oth ers haa bean Incalculable, and they have aided hundreds of unfortunate*. They first ntr weekly Ilk* the old fashioned women they claimed to be, tor plain sawing for the poor and In mates of hospitals and later they be came ambitious to do something per manent for their special work. The reault of this la a splendidly equipped ward In the Grady hospital In Atlanta, built and furnished en tirely through th* efforts of tha d* voted band of woman. In November, 1*47, the work of raising funds for the ward waa launched by a brilliant entertainment at th* Grand opera house In Atlanta, and on May 7, 1441, the corner stone waa laid with much cere mony. Today the ward, fitted up with every convenience, la a boon to th* city where It I* located. It coat over 114,444, and the women who made this money, who first Inaugurated their charity work In such a small way. proved their business enterprise.
