Confusion Will Follow as Bell Has
Again Introduced His Bill
Into the House.
That a child labor bill will be passed
by this senate was definitely deter,
mined Friday through the Introduction
of a hill bearing the signature of twen
ty-three senators—a majority of that
body.
The radical difference between this
measure and the Bell bill In the house
and the Peyton and Furr measure in
the senate is the compulsory education
clause.
The act expressly forbids the em
ployment of any child under 14 years
of age in any factory In Georgia who
cannot read and write simple sen
tences; who has not attended school
twelve weeks In the year previous to
reaching the age of 14; such children
must nttend school not less than six
weeks each year until they have pasaed
the school age, which la 1C yeara In
Georgia.

randier. Hand. Miller, Bunn, Hogan,
Strange. Bond, Bennet, McHenry,
Steed. Wheatley, Birmans, McAllister,
Foy, Eloodworth, Westbrooks, Adams,

Washington, July 0.—Commander
Sutherland cables the navy department
this afternoon that fighting has begun
In San Domingo between government
and revolutionary forces.
Washington, July 6.—Ten American
warships, with 800 marines aboard,
will be patrolling the coast of Santo
Domingo within ten days. The next
ship to sail for Santo Domingo will be
the president's yacht Mayflower, which
will start from Boston within the next
few days.
For the upholding of the American
policy of fiscal protectorate In 8anto
Domingo, ten warshlpe and 1,000 ma
rines are now required.

At the meeting of the county com
mlseloners Friday afternoon, Lucian
Harris, son of Joel chandler Harris,
was unanimously elected treasurer of
Fulton county, to succeed the late
Judge Columbus M. Payne. Mr. Harris
accepted the office. His term con
tlnues until January 1.
Hubert L. Culberson stated he would
not be a candidate for the short term,
but would present his name before the
people at the etate and county primary.
County Attorney L. Z. Roseer gave
his opinion that election by the county
commissioners was legal.
Mr. Harris has ben In the office of
Tax Collector Stewart for ten yeare.

Chicago, July 6.—More than twenty
persons were Injured In a double street
car accident and collision at North
Clark and Center streets this afternoon.
A Lincoln avenue ear was thrown
from the -track at the Clark street
curve In front of the Lincoln Park ad
ministration building. As the passen
gers were being dragged from the
wreck a south bound North Clark
street cable train craabed Into the
wreckage, Injuring many more. Eight
severely wounded men and women were
taken to a nearby drug store.
The Lincoln avenue car was wrecked
by the failure of the motorman to re
lease his lever In time to catch the
North Clark street slot.

HURT IN COLLISION
Two trolley cars on the College Park
line of the Georgia Railway and Elec
tric Company collided Thursday night
at 6:12 o'clock on a sharp curve at
Knott's crossing, half a mile thla side
of East Point, as the result of which
a mother and child were Injured and
the cars considerably damaged.

Paris, July 6.—Count Bont de Castel-
'ane Is howling for gore.
He wants to fight a duel In which the
seconds will guarantee that some one
shall be hurt. The particular object
of his wrath Is Deputy Regnles, who
headed the proceedings that led to
Bonl being unseated and fired from
the chamber of deputies.
R appears that after the debate In
which It was agreed to throw the count
out of the chamber, Bonl met Regnles
and said: ,
"Ah, bah! I do not wish to make a
scene here, so please consider your face
slapped." . .
Regnles gave vent to n very derts-
ive 'ha ha" and pasaed along.
This angered Count Bonl, who later
left his card on Regnles' desk.
When the latter found the card he
wrote the count, saying:
"Consider the duel as having been
fought and yourself dead,''

Hoke Smith spoke for two hours to
from 1,000 to 2,000 people yesterday
afternoon. His train, which was due
here from Worth at 10 o'clock, did not
arrive till 2 p. m. on account of the en
gine getting derailed before leaving
Worth, but the crowd had Juel enjoyed
a free barbecue and was ready to give
Mr. Smith a rousing welcome and pa
tient hearing.

to cross the river In a small rowboat.

SLEEPING CREW SAVED

Philadelphia, Pa., July 6.—The crew
of the wrecking steamer Somerset,
numbering five men, barely escaped
drowning In the harbor at the break
water last night when the wrecker
sank to the bottom of the Delaware
bay. The crew were sleeping in their
bunks at the time and knew nothing
of the peril until awakened by tbe in-
rushing water.

272 Windsor street, believed to have
been of Incendiary origin, city detec
tives are prosecuting a thorough In
vestigation.
The fart that the store wa* saturated
with oil and the rear door was par
tially open convince* the detectives
that the blaxe waa the work of a fire
bug The fire started In the rear of
the store and wa* discovered by an
empluyee of the Bouthem railway
shops, which are situated directly
arross Windsor street from the atore.
The fir* department wa# hurriedly
summoned and the firs extinguished
before any considerable damage had
been done.
Police Call officers Dunton and
Osllsher also went to the scene and
made an Investigation. As soon ss the
firemen entered the place they detect
ed the tell-tale oil. and It was toon
ascertained that the place had been
profusely saturated. Further Investi
gation revealed the fact that the rear
door was unfastened and partially
open. Tbe police say the door had not
been forced open, but appeared to have
been opened with a key. The police
also state that *o far aa they could
discover nothing had been stolen from
the store. •
Officer Oallaher had a conference
with the detective department Friday
morning and turned over to the sleuths
what Information ha had In hand, th*
detective* at once beginning work In
an effort to run th* firebug to earth.
