the sacred precincts of Bl. Mary’s
Episcopal church, on the Highlands,
David Simpson, head ofllce man of the
O. I,. Gregory Vinegar Company, ended
his life by blowing his brains out with
a ((-calibre revolver. When the body
waa found by the aexton the revolver
waa aim clutched In the left hand and
one chamber waa empty. No known
reaaon hga been aacertalned for tbe
rash act, an hs waa a married man of
exemplary habits and hln ofllre affairs
are said to be In perfect condition. Ills
domestic happiness Is said to have been
complete.
At the family residence, ills Six
teenth atreet, south. It waa learned
that Blmpson left home Friday at noon
with the understanding Ibal he would
take hla wife to the theater that night.
He did not return home. Apprehensive
lest something might have happened to
her husband, Mrs. Hlmpeon communi
cated with relatives Saturday and In
quiry at the office of the vinegar com
pany revealed the fact that Simpson
did not report for work Friday. His
continued absence all day Saturday
caused his wife much worry and a
brother of her husband, of Chattanoo
ga, was telegraphed for. He reached
here late Saturday and reportad the
absence of his brother lo the police.
When Sydney Pentecost, the sexton
at SI. Mary's church, reached the
church at (:(« o’clock Sunday morning
he was startled to find a dead body In
tha vestibule. Hastening to the resi
dence of the rertor, he notllled the
Rev. W. Canty Johnston, who reported
the mailer lo the police and tbe cor
oner. Simpson was Idenllfltd by tel
lers on his person, and hla body was
being removed when the first person
for the early morning service reached
the church.
The sexion aaya he heard a pistol
shot about 3 o'clock Sunday morning.
He lives near the church and declares
that he was uwukened by the report.
The rector was In his study In Ihe
church until I:(A o'clock Sunday morn
ing and says It must have been after
that hour when the man killed himself.
It Is gensrelly believed that Ihe man
entered Ihe vestibule about Iho time
mentioned by the sexton, pulled out hla
revolver, plared II In hla mouth and
pulled the trigger.
Prior to coming to Birmingham
Simpson resided In Nashville, where
he was married.
The body of the suicide was sent lo
Chattanooga, the old family home, early
this morning. t

“The abuse and mistreatment of my
father drove me to marriage. I thought
this would be n good plan lo free my
self from hie control," declared Pearl
Brooks, pretty 17-year-old daughter of
(V. C. Brooks, of No. 117 Echo street,
as she related the story of a remark
able matrimonial experience Monday
morning In tha matron's ward at the
police nation.
The girl says ahe waa married eight
months ago lo Arthur Spsar, a young
man who worked In the Kxposltlon
mitton mills, and that he deserted her
afler one week of married biles. The
oung bride waa arrested Bunday night
jy County Policeman Dunbar at the
home of Mary Gann, at Bcolta crossing,
on Ihe river trolley car line, and Is
being held In custody for her father,
Miss Brooks or Mrs. Spear stales that
It Is Ihe Intention of her father to place
her In n reformatory, but for what rea.
son she declares she has no Idea.
When asked for a statement Monday
morning, the girl said:
"My mother la dead and my father
has greatly abused me. 1 Anally
reached the point where 1 could stand
It no longer, and determined to marry
In an effort to better my condition. I
* a chance to marry Arthur Bpear
and I accepted It. This was eight
months ago. 1 was soon lo learn, how
ever. that my matrimonial bliss was
to be short-lived. After we had been
together only one week, my husband
left me. I have learned that he la In
Alabama. Afler he left ms, I went to
the country and remained for a lime
with my grandfather. 1 then came
back to Atlanta and went to the home
Of Mary Gann, on the river line. I did
this because I did not want to return to
my father." . .
In answer to n question as lo why
her father abused her, the girl-biid*

with him. He Just seemsdo have It In
for me for some reason."
The girl said ahe would be willing to
return home If ahe could gat along
peaceably with her father.

daughter of Mrs Maggie Garrett, was
found Sunday by neighbors wandering
about In an old field near the house
and crying blllarly.

returned home and waa placed under

When asked for an explanation of
her strange conduct, Mrs. Garrett said
she spent Saturday night out near the
river with some friends. She stated
that she left her child In care of an
other family, residing In Ihe house with
her, but admitted that she promised to
return within a short time. Thla fami
ly went away from the city early Sat
urday night, and Mrs. Garrett also ad
mitted she knew they were going to
leave.
After these people left the house, the
little child had to spend the remainder
of Ihe long night alone, frightened and
waeplng for “mamma." When the
mother failed lo return Sunday mom
Ing, Ihe llllle tot started out to search
for her. being found later wandering
In the old Held.
Mrs. Garrett and another Woman
were arreslbd a few weeks ago for be
Ing In an Intoxicated condition, and

Oglethorpe. Chlekatnauga Park, le to

of the regular army, making It one of

cavalry, two batteries of artillery, sig
nal and hospital corps, engineers' corps,

trict court Judge Bell has affirmed a
decision of Ihe city court, which sends
Nick Reno, a merchant, to Jail for thir
ty ilavs far violating the Sunday law
by selling two cigars and a package of
tobacco on Sunday.
Louisiana has a stringent Sunday
law. but this Is the Am time a Jail
sentence was Imposed In any case of
the kind. Reno was convicted on hla
Ant trial and Anetl (35 and costs and
given the Jail sentence.
A similar case Is pending against
Matthew Westmoreland, a saloon pro
prietor.

Professor C. R. Foster, of the Wes
leyan Female College, at Macon, ap
peared before the Methodist preachers
of Atlanta at their weekly meeting,
held Monday morning at the Wesley
Memorial church, and spoke enthusi
astically of the enlargement and ad
vancement of the College work. Ac
cording to his statements,, two new
professorships were created at the last
meeting of Ihe board of trustees of the
Institution, and with the elevated
course of study which has been adopt
ed for ihe next year, the college will
lank with the best In the South.
The ministers' meeting was devoid of
discussions, the session being devoted
almost entirely lo the talk of Professor
Foster and Ihe phases, of church work
which have developed since the last
